I saw this today and I am considering getting it. They want $80. Is that too much?
Also, I was looking at a bright yellow one, are they rare? It was a full size one for $35.
Do these need mod. light? I have had orange ones for years and they rarely bloom. They are in shade.
Is this rare? Variegated clivia??
$80.00 seems like a lot, but I've never personally seen one! It's really pretty!!! I've paid way to much for plants before. I probably will do it again soon. LOL:) I would say if you want it get it!!! I know they like bright filtered light, but I don't think they can take a lot of direct sun, especially during the summer! I have the orange and yellow one. I got both of them last year for $15.00 each for the size of the one you have pictured. The nursery was having a 50% off sale late last August. I always would see the orange clivia for sell, but didn't see the yellow variety until last year. I think it's a recent introduction to commercial trade.
Randy
Plumeriagod, where did you find your yellow Clivia for $15.00?
The yellow one is $75.00+postage, at Wayside. I paid $65+.
I've seen small variegated seedlings going for pretty high prices. I don't really know much at all about clivias, but seems different variegations and breeding lines are worth more. That looks like a really nice sized plant. I would guess $80 is a little high for it, maybe, but not absurdly so. Just my guess, tho.
Thanks all. It is calling to me. Randy, my husband may not agree with your philospophy, but I sure like it. LOL
Here is my Clivia I bought two years ago for $10. It was on clearance because it didn't have any blooms on it. It bloomed for me last year and this is the bloom that is on it right now. I was soooo lucky to get it. I have wanted one for years and couldn't afford one. I don't know what I am doing right but it sure is blooming for me. I keep it under the bench in my greenhouse and water and feed it along with everything else. For all the enjoyment I get out of it I would gladly pay $40. or $50. for one, even $80. if my husband didn't know about it. He would probably go for forty or fifty but wouldn't want me to pay eighty. Maybe if I cried a little he would. LOL
She looks great Linda. I'd say you got a good deal. Did you get her in near you? Gosh, if you ever see another one like that, grab it for me and I'll sure send you the expenses. I've heard the blooms last a long time. Very nice.
I think I got it in a Wall-Mart or Manards. Late in the season. You hardly ever see them in a place like that .I sure will pick one up for you if I ever see one again. I have a feeling that was a once in a lifetime thing. I have been looking at them for a long time. Usually in greenhouses or florest shops . Real high priced. I know the min I saw it , blooming or not, I grabed it right up. It has two new ones coming on it but I don't think you are supposed to divide them till they are really rootbound. I will save one for you when I do divide it. It will be a long time I know they are supposed to fill the pot solid. Linda
Linda your clivia is pretty. I used to drool over them and always wanted one but found them to be way too highly priced for my wallet. I finally got one last year from Lowes of all places. They had them out for Mother's Day and they were in full bloom at a cost of $16 so I jumped head first on that deal and should have bought more than one but that's all I got.
My plant is about the same size as the one in your pic and is almost in full bloom.
We have a local nursery here though that sells 3gallon pots full for around $25 which really isn't a bad price at all.
I'd love to have a yellow one but i'm not about to fork out the kind of cash that the nurseries are asking for those.
i know that varigated at the nurserys are expensive
& the yellows are expensive
but just how much should a varigated yellow be worth ?

a little extreme don't you think ?
Dick
opening checkbook and writing check...NOT
They all look beautiful! I may have to find one.. my Grandmother in Germany has a couple, and has always done wonderful with them.
want to see some HIGH priced clivias click on the link. When it opens click on clivias. Talk about needing 12 jobs to support a habit. I wonder just how many of these they actually sell and who in their right mind would buy it!!!!
http://stokestropicals.com/
hehehe.... I'll take 2 "lemon chiffons' and a couple of "sunrise, sunset," and why don't you throw ina "Tiny Tim " for good measure! LOL
Yikes, beautiful, but these are house payments here!
Yikes!!
Notice the same pic is on for the seedlings, as for the parent plant, I'll bet most seedlings don't come true to parent(not that true).
How long did it take for your seeds to come up and how did you plant them? I had one seed pod and thought I would try planting them. Linda
I just put them in the pots in planting mix, kept damp and by the south facing window.Forgot just how long it took for them to germinate, but it was several months. They are 11 months from planting now.
adding: American Clivia Society has a good planting article by James Black.(Article 1)

Thanks. Now I know what to expect. The seed pods stay on the plant a long time. It didn't get ripe till the new buds were showing this year. I guess that anything that takes that long to make a seed will take a long time to germinate. Linda
Our Lowes had them last summer for 15.00 a very nice size plant and some even larger ones for about 35.00. Have never seen a variegated one.
One of my orange clivias is headed up and should be in full bloom in about a week. Mine spend the summer outdoors in the shade, and the winter in complete darkness with no water. I am always thrilled when I see the blooms open. Mine is in a 6" pot, with roots spilling out - wonder when I should re-pot it?
Our local Target store sells blooming-size clivia (not variegated, not yellow, but still gorgeous) in 1-gallon cans for $7.99. When they finish blooming, they put them on the sale table for $3.00. Last year I picked up five of them at that price. All five are currently blooming like crazy. They're fabulous.
KayJones, when you re-pot your clivia, don't move it into a huge pot. Just put it into something slightly bigger. They bloom better when they're crowded.
Kay, how do you get yours to bloom in the shade? I have some I have had probably for 20 years and I can't remember seeing a bloom ever though I am sure they did years ago before everything got so over grown.
Belvanie, those seedlings are so cute. I wonder how long to bloom size.
David I need that Ramona. WOW! What a beauty. Gloria, yours looks like a bi-colored too. Very pretty. I need to find a deal like Lindakay.
Well I may go buy all those variegated ones Dick and post them on eBay right next to that guys for $600. If I put them down for $300, I may get lots of sales. LOL
Well, I succumbed. Tomorrow maybe the variegated. LOL
Plants for Kids (see Watchdog; I don't know how to add a link) has a nice yellow clivia (Golden Dragon) for about $15.00. The price includes UPS freight and they ship their plants out once a week. It's small, only a 3" pot, but the site says it's ready to transplant into a larger container and will bloom in 12-18 months. The site says this plant used to sell for $900.00.
Kell, I have five of these beauties, all blooming-size, and my 'secret' isn't a secret - I treat it like any other amaryllis - I set them outdoors in May, in the shade, let mother nature take care of t hem for the season, then in October I bring them in, set them in my dark clothes closet, and forget about them until May.
They set buds before I even LOOK at them again in March. I start watering them again mid-March, and they are blooming as we speak. The same is true of the other amaryllis - I have had them bloom while in dry storage!
This site looks like it has some wonderful and unusual plants, all at good prices. Here is a direct link: http://plantsforkids.com/
I didn't give my clivia any special care to bring it into bloom. Though I wasn't so sure i'd ever get it to bloom again!!!.
It was around Mothers Day last year when I bought it,so it stayed outside on the back deck all spring and summer long and recieved bright indirect light and water only when dry.
When it started to get cold in November I just sat it in a back corner of the gh and pretty much forgot about it. I did check about once every two weeks to see if it needed water. It has made one new little plant and has 2 bloom spikes in it right now.
I think I need to repot it though because it's in a one gallon pot and I lifted it out to see how the little one was doing and all I can see is just a mass of roots with the new plant twisted up iside them. I think once the blooms fade i'll remove the stalks and bump it up to a 2G pot.
Go for it, Kell. You deserve it.... :)
Thanks Eva. I am wanting everything I see these days. I can't be that deserving! LOL
I loved looking at the link for the biggest flower from your link Kay, http://qbgardens.com/blooming/corpseflowerinfo.htm. Just amazing.
I was hoping to stick my clivia in the ground Kay, and let it be on its own! LOL I am lazy!
I found this one at a nursery today. I loved the texture of the flower.
Clivias are some of my faves! They DO need a cool period to set bloom... Great photos, guys...
Kell...go for it!! If you don't deserve it, who does? PS How's your Mom?
Carol
Kell,
I paid 20.00 each for 2 seedlings of the veriaged clivia and yellow clivia. (I am talking 2 leaf seedlings). I have been growing them for 5 years and they are about the size of the plant you found. I say: GRAB IT! Then again, my plant friend call me an "enabler"
Given the slow growth of seedlings, it looks like a deal to me!
Mel
Oh NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I need such little encouragement, Mel. I am already going back to that nursery to get a plant for Susie.
I am also about to fly in a plane, I always think I am going to die on them, so I tend to buy myself anything i want or eat anything I want before I do just in case. My husband tries to tie me down at home for the week before I leave. But I tell him I am not leaving everything for his next wife. LOL
I am going to see my Mom soon, Carol!

I can't wait to see how it does for you, I can tell you right now though. They don't make enough Xanax or Ativan to ever get me back on a plane, so I can completely understand buying anything and everyone you want before boarding!

RE: Stokes Clivia prices are just too high!
My daughter gave me a yellow one (not varigated) for Mother's Day in 2004. I have a new appreciation for the gift now!
Mine bloomed in March 2005 this year.
Happy Gardening!
Here in coastal Northern CA clivias are outdoor plants which are evergreen. There's huge plantings of them in Golden Gate Park, our rival to NY's Central Park.
They bloom better when crowded, BTW, so many people keep them in pots even here.
