Cheap xanthosomas

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I bought a bunch of these xanthosomas at a local oriental market..sometimes called yautias.or malangas. This one is 3 feet tall already and has been potted about a month. These are gonna get real big when summer gets here. They were $1.59 a lb. or about .80 each. So when needing plain green xanthosomas or taros visit your oriental market and save some serious bread!!LOL

Wow!! Thanks for the heads up.. I remember now hearing about this last year, but was unable to find an Oriental Market. Im sure there are some around here, as Denver is not a small city LOL.
It looks great Kyle... and for the price.. you just cant go wrong.

Shelly... try some latino stores too! even mediterranean store sells them too!

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

I did that last year, went to the grocery store and lo and behold they were selling taro. I just bought one piece to have some fun and about two weeks later the squirrels decided it was easy pickings for dinner.

Thanks MV! Will do!

They are tasty when you cook them, good with garlic and butter too. Be careful , though, I've heard they're poisonous when not cooked, so nobody get the idea to chew on 'em raw. LOL
I bought yautia lila the other day, because a friend of mine from Puerto Rico told me buy them and plant them. Now that I see this picture, I'm so glad I did!

u're welcome Shelly :D.

Jackie, i've eaten taros and the likes of it, all my life. so far am still very much alive and kicking LOL!!! we cook them as main dishes as well as dessert.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

MaVie, do you eat them raw too? Is it true that they have to be cooked to eat?
I only have latin recipes for taro, I need an Asian recipe to try!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

no, i have not eaten them raw Jackie. i do not know about poison in taro. i only know if not properly cooked, it will give ones throat a severe scratchy feeling. maybe carol would know. i just try to remember warnings my granny told me when i was young.

i doubt if u would like to learn how to cook them cuz too much work involve in preparing, if not cleaning. i will try to find simple recipe for u and send privately.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Thank you MaVie, only when you have the time. I don't mind the peeling, even if it can be tedious :) I like to cook almost as much as I like to eat.
Maybe the sore throat is a major warning not to proceed...

I hope to grow some as nice as Eclipse for my beds this year.

Jackie, when i peel taros: back in the old country, we were told to coat our hands with oil. here i use those disposable latex globes. it is always good to be on the safe side than be sorry. besides, taros leaves dark residue on ur nails if not ur skin.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Ah,,,never knew this method. I have had that happen to me in the past.
We will have to talk, MaVie. Thank you!!

Here all this time I thought you were vacationing Kyle. And you are really growing xanthosomas!! No rest for the gardener!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Kyle, how did you plant the malangas? Did you cover them or leave the half uncovered? Did you plant them on their sides?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I planted them broad end up and just barely covered the tip of the new growth.they make roots right at the top of the tuber..so they need covered a little.
I plant then narrow end down and broad end up.Keep lightly moist..NOT WET or they will rot out.Keep warm and away they go! :-)

Hi,

All Aroids, including taro and malanga, have tiny needle-like Calcium oxylate crystals in their leaves, stems and tubers. You should always wear gloves when pruning, replanting, or peeling for cooking.

The crystals aren't poisonous, per se; but, the crystals can cause irritation to your skin, mouth, lips, etc. enough to swell and close your throat. Tracheotomies are no fun for anyone. If you have pets, you should keep them away from them.

I forget who; but, someone here had a horror story about weed wacking a Philodendron or Synogium. They said it was 100 times worse than poison ivy.

The crystals are destroyed by cooking.
