Dr. Seuss - The Prescription for an Easy Brug

Northern California, CA

He does all the work, makes house calls, and takes care of himself! Just now reappearing after a major chop job late last fall.

One of my favorites. Nice picture.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

He called at my house too but the diagnoses was 'no flowers yet'

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I was checking the tags on my brugs, and goofy me...I thought I had his relative Charles Grimaldi, but I have the Dr too. No blooms last year, so I'm hoping for this year!
Pic looks great, inspiration for me LOL

ahhhh man! He just happens to be one of original cuttings I aquired in Nov. Some of the others are starting to bud and maybe he'll follow suit since they're all about the same size.

Could someone please tell me in what ways Dr. Suess and CG are different....I have one that was labeled Insigni Pink...but it is an orange. When I asked the gal who gave it to me, she said she also had CG and Dr. Suess...so it must be one of them!

Hi Margie -

I'm not the one to ask....LOL

This was CG, until sometime last year when someone pointed out that the leaves weren't correct for CG and it should be labelled Dr. Seuss. It's my two big yellow ones to me.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Candy...well maybe someone will come along who can tell me which one mine is too !!!

I see mine as more orange than yellow!

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Mine is still in the basement. One more week and he has to make a house call.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I can't tell by the blooms, but the foliage on Dr. Suess is serrated. I have had what was said to be CG also and it had some serration, but not all the leaves were that way. Probably more smooth edged leaves than not.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Shirley....so on Dr. Suess....all of the leaves will be serrated? I believe mine has some leaves serrated, but not all...

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I just received a 2 1/2 foot plant which I ordered online and it was in great condition upon arrival.

Thank you for making me smile while dreaming of summer blooms.

Congratulations Judy, is it a Dr? I hope it blooms like crazy for you!
I think that I found the thread that Vi was talking about, when Gretchen was explaining the Hetty Krauss history. Is it this?

I didn't have it last year. Let me look up a picture and see if it will help.

This one is Dr. Suess. I looked at the pictures I have of the one Kell gave me as Charles Grimaldi and it has serrated leaves as well. I'll put it in the next post.

This is CG. You can see serration, but also smooth edged leaves. This picture was taken after the first frost so it is a little dumpy looking.

lol lol Well I got one of each, so hopefully I'm gonna be covered in flavors of orange.

I even ordered one on eBay which was described as Dreamsickle. I know immediately some minds jump to "trash brug" but the picture was a delight and I validated it wasn't pedigreed prior to purchasing so I knew what I was getting. If the flowers match the picture, it will make me happy.

We must all enjoy life while we can.

Judy...I got a Dreamsickle from a seller on e-bay also. The photo is lovely! Please be sure to post yours when it flowers and I will too!

Here is my CG last July. I have had it I think 4 years now. It has always been a potted plant. What I find as so interesting about it is that it has never suckered, not once!! I have a straight and true trunk and no side growth even ever. The leaves can be serrated when new on mine then go to a smooth edge.

Here is a close up. You can tell the blooms hang straight down like Kyle mentioned as a characteristic of CG. Well, the ones that are not being pushed out by other blooms. LOL

Well, do you all think that the California sun had anything to do with the Dr. blooming for Happenstance? SF may not be much sun but any at all is more than the rest of us are getting right now.

Jeanette

Northern California, CA

It's a LOT warmer and sunnier where I am Jeanette, than in SF proper. We're about 50 miles due east of The City and a little colder in the winter, but waaayyy hotter in the summer with average temps of 85-110F and sunshine every day! (Well almost every day.) Dr Seuss really only doesn't have flowers for about a month to six weeks each year. The wind really makes the winter blooms look tattered and he could be renamed 'Shredded Dr Seuss' during Dec and January.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

So...would you consider these blossoms to be hanging or nodding...Not quite hanging it seems to me...

Evening Margie -

I would describe mine as half-nodding. :-) But what do I know, most of the pictures of mine are ID'd as CG because that's what it was labelled. So I usually just say "those big yellow hangy down flower things."

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi Candy...I think mine are half nodding also...trying to see if it is a Dr. S instead of a CG!

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Well shoot, now I'm just sick about this. I have what I thought and is tagged as Dr. Suess and it's leaves aren't serrated at all. I don't have one brug with serrated leaves...I think they are really interesting leaves. So I must have 'CG'???

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I think the problem is that there are now lots of brugs that look like CG and Dr. Seuss.

For example, there is a nursery here who must grow these yellows by seed. 2 years ago I bought 3 pots of them from this one grower. Each was very similar but yet each was different. So I assumed they must grow them from seed and not cuttings. Big Yella is one of the three. He is the best one of the 3, in fact far superior in color.

So I think it is almost impossible now to be sure what you have. Even if it is named when you got it, it may be mislabeled, for so many now do photo IDs and then they label the pot and give them as cuttings.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

I got a Dr. S from Vallegrow last november and Renee gave me a cutting in Jan.
I just looked and happen to have them side by side. They both have serrated leaves.

My Insignis Pink has serrated leaves as well but they are larger and more of a round shape.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

what you're saying is, insig. pink & Dr. S. have surrated leaves? Neither of mine have serrated...both labeled, Dr. Suess & Insig. Pink. This is disappointing if I don't have Dr. S though, I really wanted him. I need the Doc!!!!!!!!!!!! :-(...

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Well definitely the Dr. S's with toothy leaves.

erratum: I misread on the IP. It's actually an Aurea Pink x Golden Lady from Renee. Now that girl is growing some big dark green, hair leaves. Which of the parents contributed the serration?

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Not sure 8ftbed. I wish I understood, maybe someone can help us. I have a seedling I grew out last summer 'insig. pink x Becca Lynn' and it doesn't have surrated leave either.

Northern California, CA

Another point that makes this all more confusing is that in the winter my Dr. Seuss has very small immature leaves that take a beating from the wind and rain. They are NOT serrated, but that's because they never get big enough to be serrated.

If you looked at my plants right now, as the leaves are maturing with a little warmer weather, there are still no serrations, but there will be in warmer weather. The color also changes from pale yellow, to brighter yellow, to a true golden yellow in the heat of summer. When I say golden yellow, I agree with Margie that it has an orange caste to it in the hot weather.
