Might try the experts in the Tropicals forum.
I have a banana growing inground. The freezes leave it looking very sad but it comes back. It was planted in a compost mix but has had no attention since except watering in very dry spells. It's been there five years and has spread beyond the original planting spot.
If you want flowers and fruit, you will need to keep it from freezing in the winter. They love fertilize, full sun and lots and lots of water. A high nitrogen fertilize is okay, I use whatever I've got on hand, they don't seem to mind.
A dwarf should grow fine in a large pot and ought to have fruit. They fruits take about 4 months to ripen.
The banana I have is classified as "hardy" and has flowered and fruited every year. However the fruits are so small as to be almost useless. I have ordered another type that I will protect from freezes.
okay thanks. this one will stay inside as we lost on putting it in the ground.
i want it to produce and if it does wonderful. i am not worried about eating them or anything just want it to produce for my daughter. so lots of fertilizer and water. cool we can handle that.
Thanks Marie
Imzadi, if it's the dwarf cavendish, the fruit is very good. My last stalk had a couple hundred bananas that ripened over a 2-3 week period. I sure made lots of banana bread and banana pudding plus ate them fresh. The fruit is small(about 4 inches long), but so much better than the ones in the grocery store.
The banana "Anna" that I grew outdoors for a number of years in So. Calif. (zone 9a) produced very well also. The fruits were short but fat and so delicious. When you taste them ripe from the plant the flavor is just more complete.
this is my daughters and hubbys plant. i can not have bananas.
i am highly Allergic to them.
so as far as eating them i will live though them.
Oh, mercy, that's really sad! Well, at least your DH and DD can enjoy them. Good of you to grow it for them. Here's wishing you great success.
