What is the best pot size for planting Brugs in? I plan on planting as many as I can in the ground but would like to put some in pots and set around. I was checking out EBay and a person there has 1,2,3,4 and 7 gallon size. Any recommendations.
Linda
What is the best Pot Size
Linda, Depending on the size of plant anywhere from 2 gal on up .
One gal. for seedlings works too.

Linda if you are going to keep it in the pot and over winter it in the pot I would reccommend 15 gal minimum
I agree with Donna. I started my brug growing in 5 gallon pots. It takes a lot of watering to keep them happy. Now I'm using 20 gallon pots. Just the cheap black plastic. I get them through my local nursery for $4.50 each, so I just buy a few each year. Scoot is right...those baby seedlings will make it the first year in a gallon or two gallon size pot okay.
I'm glad this question was posted, because, I hope and pray, I will have to worry about planting more of them this year to overwinter than last year LOL
I was/am worried about putting them in pots that are too big ( you know I have past issues with drowning brugs & potting up) but I guess part of the secret of watering any brug in any container has to do with type of planting medium and having excellent drainage.
Ok, goofy question #12 for me, but I have to have it spelled out for me.
About how big should the brug be to warrant a 15 gallon pot?
Jackie, I put my cuttings that I take in the fall into gallon pots for the winter and then they go into the big pots for the summer. So I guess the answer is that they don't have to be huge...just well rooted.
Thanks Shirley!!
You're welcome.
all mine are in 5 gallon pots which are free from the local nursery, anything above is 7.00 and l0.00 a pop and the nursery that gives me the 5 gallons won't even sell the bigger ones. I'm out of luck putting min in anything bigger than 5 gallon but I have some 6 foot brugs growing nicely in 5 gallon pots. But you know, I swear this is true, but don't know it, seems the bigger the pot I put my brugs in the faster they grow, I have the same size brugs in gallon pots, and put about 20 of them in 5 gallon pots and the ones in 5 gallon pots are 3 times bigger than the ones in gallon pots, and that's about a 4 week period there of growing time. It s' amazing how much faster they seem go grow when you give those roots room to expand, just imagine how big they 'd be in 20 gallon pots LOL.
kathy
Kathy, they look great. I think you'e on to something. Roots can probably spread & grow better like Shirley was saying. Thanks for the advice!
I wish my nurseries around here would give away anything for free, but no such luck. It looks like I will have to make some purchases. At least, now I know what I'm after!
Jackie
Don't forget too...you can put your plant in a permanent smaller container with holes drilled to let the roots grow out and then into a larger one or into the ground, like monika suggests! This is a good way to do it if you need to lift your brugs each winter!
All mine are cuttings from this year with about 10 that was started from seed. I have put just about all of them in a vinegar gallon jug cut in half. I can see the roots in them and they are all showing through the sides of the jug. I know I am not going to be able to plant every one out in the yard and was wanting to be able to put them in a large enough pot for the summer, this is why I was inquiring about the size of a pot.
I did check some out on EBay but they are wanting a arm and a leg to ship them. I also checked out another place there shipping was a little better but of course the price for theres were a little high, when you need about 40 of them.
I could go back to my nursery and see if they have any that large, the last time I was there I got 30, 5 and 6 inch size pots for $5.00. These I use for my hibiscus until they get a little bigger, then when I put them outside they will have to go in larger pots as well.
picturelady I think that is what I need to do, I am sure I would have trouble with 15 Gal. pots with no one to help, right now most of mine are in Gal. pots and I know I need to get them into larger ones befor putting outside, We only have one nursery around here and they sure do not give anything away. but they do have cheap plastic ones at the Dollar General.
Doris
I am trying to find out the size of the permanent pot...it looks to me like 5 gallon...as monika says that a size 101 is 2.5 Gal and this one is called a 201....She makes 10 holes with a
1 1/2 inch diameter in the bottom and in the side wall...2 rows of 2" holes about 6" apart...She says after planting into a larger container or into the ground, only water and feed into the small permanent container. Come time to bring in...you trim the roots at the permanent container at the outer side.
Sounds like a great idea...I have not tried it yet, especially since I can leave some brugs outdoors all year long.
Doris...BTW...I am loving watching my seedlings roots grow through your clear 4" containers!
Margie
It is true that the bigger the pot the faster and bigger it will grow but....... for those that can not handle a huge pot or don't have the room a 5-7 gal pot will do fine.
As picturelady suggests you can drill holes in the side and bottom of pot and sink it in the ground. In the fall dig it up and cut any roots growing outside pot and put into a garbage bag with DRAINAGE holes in the bottom. This will keep the roots from drying out through the holes.
Or you can take it out of the 5 gal pot in the spring, root prune it and place it back in the same pot with fresh potting soil.
Hi all, I know I have mentioned this container before and some of
you might remember it from the cut tire I showed several weeks back.
I get these 19 gallon rope handle tubs at Walmart. They only come out
with this color of black during Halloween. I place my larger (tall brugs)
in them and they work out great! I drill holes into the sides of them for
drainage about an inch from the bottom.
They are easily moved around by dragging them by the handles. The
bottoms are wide enough to keep the plant stable and not topple over
from a wind. Some of the plastic ones are odd colors but someone told
me about this new spray paint called fusion that is specially made for
plastic and you can cover them up that way.
Here at our Wally world they are priced at just under $5.00 and for me that is a great price for such a large container. Scooterbug said they are called Muck buckets and are used in her part of the country to haul around Muck!!! LOL
Excellent substitute for a big pot, Kin. Besides, they are very sturdy looking. Great idea. I might try some of those this year too. Where at WallyWorld do I look for them? I don't care what color they are. I'll paint them. Heck, I might even leave them colored.
The colors are not all that bad but some are what I call unknown colors to Nature! They are usually located in the dept. that has all the plastic stackable drawers and waste paper trash bins.
I do sware by this that they move quite easily on grass concrete etc. I move them around a lot I'm one of those people who has to see things all over before I pick a spot!!!! LOL They are quite sturdy also.
Thanks. I'll be looking for them.
GardenGuyKin you have hit the nail square on the head. I love that ideal, and I think I have seen them at our tiny little wally world. If not I will be making a little travel trip to the nearest Large Walmart. I love to set my plants out on the patio and by doing this if there is hail in the forecast, then I can go out and scoot them under the patio cover we have build on. As far as I can see I plan on starting to buy 2 or 3 a week and by the time I am ready to plant out side I should have enough to put some of my Brugs in. Black is find for the color and I could get some fusion spray and see if I can get artistic, (now that's a joke LAUGH everyone, I don't have a artistic bone in my body.
LOL 2pugdogs!!!
You can also put those grass matts that you use at the beach.
Just cut it to the size(width) of the container and wrap it around it. I have
used hot glue gun and also some twine to keep in into place. don't get
to artistic now you know the attention is to be placed on the Brug
not the container! LOL

Yes but the pot and the flower has to go hand in hand. One beauty deserves another.
I figure if I give my brugs a pretty pot to live in, then maybe they will treat me good and deliver some beautiful blooms. Thanks again for the wonderful ideal on the rope tubs. I will post some pictures after mine are all planted and sitting around on my patio.
I am so grateful for all of this excellent advice. I think I will try everything mentioned here in some form or fashion.
I am so ready to go, I feel like I could bust...if only the weather would cooperate now!
Thank you all.
The Dollar General has tubs like GardenGuyKins, not black you get bright colors but if you bury it like Monika suggests no problem.... and maybe you like the bright colors...... I thought the last one I bought at the Dollar General was 5.00 but it could have been 10.00......
The bright colors will give my ole patio a little color. But $10. would be a little pricey.
Last Saturday our temp. here was 86 degrees, then Sunday it was 49 degrees, and the temp. just kept dropping. I think today it is suppose to reach a high of 52 degrees. I am thinking about staying inside I don't want to take a chance on having a heat stroke. LOL.
picturelady so happy you are enjoying them, I love mine too.
we have those pots at out dollar store for $6 so I will try them, they have the rope handles
Linda, you are keeping me smiling today. LOL!
I am about to drive myself nuts. I could start a quilt, but I am ready to move some of the plants outside. Then I find myself going to EBay checking out there plants, then anytime someone post a good site to check out more flowers then I go there, the front of my T-shirt is wet from drooling so much on it. I need something to do, COME ON SPRING......
Thanks Brugie that was a compliment. Then there is a contest going and I keep entering in it, don't know why I think in my whole life I have won two things, but you know it is so much fun.
Shirley I had many of mine in those pots from Wally World last year. They are fabulous. Mine are sky blue colored. Think they were 4.88 a piece. A great Buy
I hope you win Linda! Sounds like it is your turn.
So Kin, how do you drill holes in it? In the past I bought pots I could cut holes in with a scissors, but these are way too thick for that. If I could find black, I would buy some of them in a second. I have the red and fluorescent green now, I use them for weeding/trimming and carting soil around. They are so handy.
I saw some muck pots at Tractor Supply that had patterns as well as colors. Like wood grain in green or brown.
Is that a web site Ted? I'll have to do some scouting around.
Went to Walmart today pickup 3 of the 19 gal. rope tubs they were a pretty blue and $4.84. Then went out to Dollar General and they had 20 gal. rope tubs for $5. Didn't buy any of them, 19 gal will be big enough for me. They were blue as well.
Good Heavens, I use muck buckets to haul goat poop which is lightweight. After adding soil and a plant.
You guys are all gonna have to visit the chiropractor next fall ! LOL !
no u don't... that is if u use small pcs of wood to anchor those movable wheels. it is easy to do. drill some holes at the bottom of those rope tub. secure the small pcs of wood with screw to hold the movable wheels. make more holes for the water to drip off. with the movable wheels, u do not need to lift those rope tubs with plants.... just pull the rope tub where u want it located. just a thought.
Wal-Mart has them in black, Kell.
