Has anyone grown Bletilla striata (Hardy Orchid)?
Bletilla striata (Hardy Orchid)
I tried.....and failed........about fifteen years ago. The plant material I had was on the puny side and maybe didn't really have a chance. Do you have a source for it?
I bought several packages (Van Bloem Gardens) of small rhizomes that are supposed to produce pink blooms from my favorite local nursery. There are 2 in the package and the package was $6.95. The labelling states that the ones I bought grow to 10 inches tall. But the outside labelling says that they grow in full sun and the inside labelling states that they need partial shade. I decided that they need partial shade after doing a little research. But as always, I am not sure that they will grow and naturalize here. Thanks for your comments.
Yuska, Rainbow Gardens on Bandera Road is where I bought the rhizomes.
Htop,
Is this the plant? I got this last year , and I grow mine in a container. It bloomed for the first time last week. It is pure white. I have another one larger , and it should bloom soon.I don't know the color of that one. I have mine on a covered deck , so it get partial shade. I think I bought mine at lowes last year. Good luck with yours.
Patti
Thanks, htop. I need to make a run to Rainbow for some other items as well and will be sure to ask for rhizomes, especially after seeing Patti's lovely specimen. And as always, we need to use caution on that "full sun" recommendation! Thanks to both of you. Yuska
Patti, that looks like one of the varieties. It sure is lovely. Thanks for posting it. The ones I bought are supposed to have have pink blooms. I haven't planted mine yet, but am going to do so tomorrow. Its a little late to plant them, but I guess its better late than never. They are sprouting. I may have to wait awhile before they bloom. Thanks for the information ... I will plant them in partial shade.
Yuska, you're quite welcome. The rhizome packages are on your right after just entering the nursery where all of the nonpackaged and packaged bulbs are located in the bins. Yep, gotta watch out for those plant in "full sun" directions.
Hi all, I have the violet ones, and some of the yellow ones (from Yuccado nursery) in my yard. The violet ones have been here since the 80's (my mother planted them) and I've spread them into various areas since I took over the gardening in 97. The only problem I've ever had with them is that they tend to try blooming early sometimes and get frostbitten. This is the second season for the yellow ones and they don't look very good for some reason; I'm thinking that they aren't very happy in the spot I planted them.
This picture is from last year...
Thanks htop Yuska,
I was very please to see it bloom. I would like to get more of them.
Patti
Indogoez, very pretty blooms. Thanks for sharing the photo as well as the information. Both yours and Patti's bloom in the spring. The descriptions on the packages I bought state they bloom in the summer. That's why it is so good to be able to talk to fellow Texans who have grown them and know where to plant them plus other details. Are yours in full sun? It is great to know that Yuccado has them. I would love to plant some that have different colored blooms.
htop, mine get some sun, but they tend to burn in the summer, although it hasn't affected them adversely that I can tell. The ones I have in the back are in more shade and bloom a few weeks later than the ones in the picture.
Indigoez, again, thanks for the info. (Sorry, I made a typing mistake when I typed your name on my last post.)
