I got a gallon plant of this lovely thing in a local nursery for a very reasonable price. It is said to become invasive, so I am watching it closely. It has done well in my redwood forest garden, lots of length, but few flowers. I've read do NOT fertilize as this will discourage flower production. And in winter cut down to the ground! Then you get all new growth.

And here's a picture of one blossom up close....

I do love this plant. It also grows in the sand dunes by the beaches down in Santa Cruz CA.

P.S.

Anyone ever grow in a large pot with poor soil? Wonder if it would work? I should ask in container gardening forum.

srkrause,
you lucky dog.. I just love it. Saw one at huntington gardens and have not been able to find one yet. Be sure to save some seeds if you can. I have more space than money...lol. one acre if full of weeds and bare when the the weeds die down.. and the other I am working on slowly..

I want one sooooo bad. It does grow into a large bush. Antoinette

There are a few of these around in my neighborhood. They do get very large.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the seeds require some sort of unusual heat treatment to germinate, so a plant may be a better deal.

This page seems to confirm that:

eje, Oh my lord, I would be afraid to kill the seeds if I burned them. Annie's listed some plants but she was out this year. I have to go hunting around and see if I find one, Huntington will have their yearly sale again, but finding one at the sale before everybody else is another thing, they have limited amounts of each plant.

What nursery did you get yours at srcrause? I may have to take a drive from Mo Valley to around your neck of the woods. I may be able to get one of the nurseries here to order one, don't know though.

I got my plant a The Garden Company on Mission Street in Santa Cruz. I had seen them before in other places, but they did not look as good as the ones there so I bought one. This was at least a year ago.
