Today me and my 5 yr old son went to the butterfly exhibit at our Botanic Gardens. It was fun, and humid, as usual. I didn't see anything really interesting tho. I only saw one Paper Kite passing by and never got a picture of it. As usual, the Morphos were chasing around but never posing. The best part was when one little one (unidentified) fly on to my son's hand. It just loved him! It crawled all over drinking something from his fingers and skin on his hand. It flew off and then came back to him again. People were stopping to take pics. I have involved him the last few years in my new interest in butterflies and raising them. This sure made him feel special, which I hope feeds the interest I'm trying to instill in him.
My butterfly exhibit pics...
What very fun pics! Last year our family went to a butterfly house at the local arboretum. I was just beginning my last trimester, but my tummy was absolutely HUGE. A black swallowtail found my protruding middle to be the perfect place to perch, though. For at least a full minute, the butterfly just hung out on my mid-section. It was just the right height for my young daughters to really get a good look :) It's so neat to watch our children enjoying the pure wonder of nature, isn't it? I'm sure that the look on your son's face was the best part of the whole outing :) Thanks so much for sharing the pics!

Are the butterflies there Texas natives?
Nah, they are the same ones that are usually at every exhibit. I saw the same little Postman's, Morpho's, and Longwings as usual. There were quite a few more eclosing in the boxes but I missed being able to take pics since they weren't released today. Tomorrow there will be Malachites and Paper Whites and some others that are usually found in the Rain Forest areas. (I guess that's where they come from since the plants and environment are kept like the Rain Forest)
KKB, what a thrill for your son! I bet he was beaming all day about that :-)
My favorite of your pics is the Atlas Moth....it's gorgeous!

konkreteblond, great pictures of the butterflies and your son. Nice that you are getting him interested. DonnaS
Yep, the lad is getting off to a great start!
Some wonderful shots konkreteblond! Certainly 'looked' like the both of you enjoyed your lil adventure!!
Hee .. The thing that truly amazes me, is reading in your post .. that a 5 yr old was intently still and patient for ANY length of time: not to mention .. a 5 yr old 'feller', at that! .. (*jes teasin' the both of you!*) ..
And, a lil cutie lad you've got there. No doubt he already makes you very very proud!
Appreciate your sharing the photos, with us!

He is my "sweet pea" and ALL boy. I really want him to enjoy other things in life besides Godzilla, Star Wars and Power Rangers!!! LOL He has his own little area in my flower bed that is his own, complete with a stepping stone we made with his handprint and a few little garden critter statues. This year (hopefully tomorrow!) we are cutting out another hunk of grass (yay) and making him a real garden. Dad is actually going to get involved and wants to plant veggies. I might reclaim his area in my bed now. lol His veggie bed will be the perfect place for his toys to go to war when we are outside.
Lovely photos, Konkreteblond. Your son is really getting big! Such a cutie-patootie, too. :) Thank you for sharing, as always. You are so generous with your pictures. :)
konkreteblond, thanks for posting your visit to the Botanical Gardens - a nice series of shots. I'm looking forward to my next visit to our local butterfly exhibit in Wheaton, MD, when it re-opens in May.
Probably the same buttterflies, but a new camera and a different setting or pose will still make it interesting for me. Plus, this year (with your past assistance), I will be able to disquise myself as a Lepidoptera EXPERT ... lol.
