Hello,
I haven't planted caladiums before and would like to try them, but I'm a bit confused. Everything I've read online says nearly all of them require shade. But I saw some beautiful looking bulbs at my local Lowes garden center and the packages clearly say full sun to part shade. I know that some varieties can take more sun than others... I can't imagine that Lowes carries anything particualrly rare or out of the ordinary. Has anybody tried planting these in fulll sun? One of the locations I'd like to put them in will have full sun until mid to late afternoon (I'm in zone 8b). Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Caladiums in full sun?
In your zone you are much better off planting in shade than full sun. Some cultivars are much better at handling sun than others. You can't even generalize by colors.. it is really cultivar determined. Full sun in the north is not the same as full sun in the south. In our area (zone6b) we could probably get away with full sun (and not always), but in your zone I would not think so.
I'm in 8b too and alot of times full sun can even mean part sun for us. If something says "zones 4-8" or something like that and "sun to part shade" for us that means part shade and for zome 4 it means full sun.
Strep-leaf varieties have a smaller and thicker leaf than the regular caladiums and thus more suitable to plant in full sun. Most of the regular ones should be planted in the semi shade and avoid the mid-day sun. Compare the thickness of the leaves from a caladium Candidum and that of a John Peed and see the difference in leaf structure. Make sure they get plenty of water when it is dry and hot.
Thank you all for your input, it's quite helpful. Now that I've been looking at the caladiums, I think I will definitely have to plant some. But I'll put them in a different location than I originally planned, where they'll get the shade they need. I have a place out back that would probably be perfect. Now, all I have to do is decide what color :-)
Thanks again!
