Garlic Woes

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Well, that garlic clove out of my refrigerator that I planted last month.... you know the one.... the one I boasted about in the green peppers thread how quickly it sprouted and how fast it grew? Well, now some of its leaves are yellowing on the top 1 to 2 inches then just drooping over and shriveling up. Not enough sun (I had to move them to the edge of the window sill)? Too much water? Or just too much to hope that a garlic clove from the grocery store would actually grow to maturity and produce a new head? :-(

Here's two sites I found:
http://www.naturalhub.com/grow_vegetable_type_garlic.htm
http://www.garlic-central.com/garlic-growing.html

I tried growing them one year but like yours mine went yellow and then belly up. :( I do know a number of people have grown grocery store varieties and have grown them with success.

I've grown garlic from the grocery store and they've been fine. I always plant mine mid Sept. to mid Oct. I don't think it grows that well when you plant it in the spring.

Thanks for the links Pam. I took a quick look at both this morning. Unfortunately, I think it looks like I have one of the two varieties of garlic rot. Starting it indoors was probably a bad thing - it's probably way too warm for it. Oh well. I'll leave it for now and see if - by some miracle :-) - it recovers, then I'll try again in the fall and do it properly this time. --Ginny

I wonder if the garlic is sometimes sprayed with a sprouting inhibitor, like potatoes are? But you're right about the heat, Ginny. Mine in the unheated g.h. are doing really well, but it drops to 40 at night .

It zooms up to 80 during the day--even with one of the vents open, but the garlic seems to handle the daytime heat okay. I don't like to cool it off too much during the day there because I need the heat sink for the night! So I always have a problem finding places for all my seedlings that really want cool growing temperatures, everything from Lobelia (likes under 50) to Dusty Miller through to Petunias, which prefer around 55.

the solution is 2 or maybe 3 different greenhouses - one tropical, one warm nursery stock and one cold nursery stock. How about a very tiny house surrounded by four sides of greenhouse.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Ooooh, I like that! A teensy house surrounded by greenhouses would suit me just fine :-)

Precipice Valley, BC(Zone 2a)

Me too. I bet with a little judicious planning the whole east, south and west parts of our house could become greenhouse. After all, all we REALLY need is a stove and sink, small bedroom, right? TV tables. Oh, and a bathroom.

Is there any way to do a password thingy on DG so that my husband can't access these sentiments? I'd find myself AND every plant in the house, out in the still-cold greenhouse....

LOL I don't think mine would care - as long as he could have a garage and workshop just as big as my greenhouses! Hey, this could work. Not only would he be as happy as the proverbial pig with his new shop, he'd also get out of all of those annoying garden building chores I keep lining up for him. Stuff like stripping sod, digging holes, shovelling soil, moving rocks, etc., etc.

I have the same wish list. Each summer I cross out the previous year's date and insert the new one. That's often the only change....sort of like my New Year's resolutions.

thanks for the smiles ladies; it's been the sort of day when I could use them.

I don't know. Yesterday I liked the idea of a house surrounded by greenhouses but after spending the afternoon standing on top of a stepladder trying to scrub the black mold off the top of the solarium, I'm not so sure. I needed to get it done before we put the shade cloth up. I'm sure having the shade cloth on there all summer is what causes the mold to grow but it's necessary. I don't think we've ever had to put it up quite this early but we've had so many sunny days lately I was worried about leaves starting to get burned. Also, I swear I've had to water those brugmansias twice a day some days. Hopefully the leaves won't be drooping so much on some of them now.

Precipice Valley, BC(Zone 2a)

Sandy, sounds like you need more ventilation. The shade cloth on its own won't cause mold to grow.

That's a perfect size gardening plot--a lot of work, though.

Yeah, when I remembered about the tomato blight, and the white flies, and the spider mites...perhaps I'll keep the house as a house after all!

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

This mold is on the outside between the shade cloth and the top of the solarium. It doesn't build up too fast and I think it's caused by bits of leaves and things that don't wash off the top because the shade cloth holds it there. I'm not going to tackle the mold on the inside of the solarium until I move all the brugs outside in May. That's a whole day job. Ü

Just dropping a quick line to let everyone know I'm heading off this weekend to a conference in Las Vegas. So if anyone replies to one of my posts or sends out a question to me and I don't respond for a week it's because I'm not around. I'll be back one week from Monday. Wish me luck everyone! (What, you didn't think I'd be takin' time to gamble a little too?)

Have a wonderful time, Ginny. You are a lucky ducky indeed. Talk to you in a week. Win big....(ahem...if you have time ;).

Best of luck in Vegas.
