Cuttings look wimpy

Ridgeville, IN(Zone 5a)

I trimmed up my tropical hibiscus tree yesterday and put the cuttings (new growth) in a glass of water. Today the cuttings look rather wimpy and limp, maybe even wilted. Should I have done something different? Jenny

Putting a plastic bag over the top, big enough to cover all the vegetation and theglass, might help. Also, you don't want too many leaves on your cutting at this time. 2-3 should be sufficient to root them.

Thanks Donna. How long should I expect it to take before roots form? Jenny

Depending on how warm the area is anywhere from 10 days to a couple months.

LOL That's quite a time frame. I did put them inside a ziplock bag, and they do look better. :o) Jenny

I took a bunch of cuttings late last year from a variety of plants about town; some rooted in a week and others are still on my southern facing, closed-in back porch trying. And some of those trying are from the same bush as some that rooted right away.

Greener wood on one cutting than on another is the only thing I can figure could the difference....

Mine are very young green cuttings (new growth).....maybe they will root quicker?

Jenny

Very possibly. Just make sure they don't stay too wet. They will be more susceptible to root than a semi- or hardwood cutting.

That was suppose to be, "Very possibly. Just make sure they don't stay too wet. They will be more susceptible to rot than a semi- or hardwood cutting."
