I got some Bayer Advanced Garden all in one rose and flower care to use on my gardenias. It says use on roses, flowers, iris, hibiscus, azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons and other shrubs. It takes care of aphids. The brugs in my "greenhouse" have aphids and I was wondering if anyone knows if it would be safe to use on them. You mix it with water and then water the plants rather then spraying. Thanks!
Bayer Advanced Garden question
Yes, I used it last year. I used the Bayer 3 in 1 Systemic for Roses and Flowers. Its liquid and you mix it and pour an exact amount on the soil. You can also mix a weaker strength and spray the foliage, if memory serves me correctly. Anyway, I really like it. Takes care of most pests EXCEPT spider mites.
Thank you! It's WAY too windy today to be spraying.
Ginger,
I just put some of the 3-in-1 systemic on my camellias and roses yesterday. I did it b/c of a few people here on DG who said it was good stuff. I think that was mostly in the roses forum, but it had good reviews. I have my brug cuttings hardening off right now, but when I was ready to plant them I was gonna ask the same thing, so thanks for posting this!
Since I just applied it yesterday, I kind of remember this. There are instructions for individual plants and instructions for applying to entire flowerbeds. The latter is a more dilute solution since it will damage leaves. The "per plant" instructions say to avoid the leaves entirely. But, I just got the impression the flowerbed method assumes you will inadvertently get some on the leaves so that's why it's more dilute. However, I did not get the impression it is intended to be applied like a "Miracle Grow" type foliar feeding.
I found that it took a lot more than I was expecting. Probably b/c I am used to the other liquid products- plant foods, fertilizers, weed killer, bug killer, etc. and they always have pretty small amounts of the product specified in the instructions. This stuff says to use 4 tablespoons PER PLANT for roses and 2 tablespoons per foot (height) on camellias. Mine are almost 3 feet tall. So for 4 camellias and 4 rose bushes I used almost half the bottle. And the stuff ain’t cheap! But if it keeps the nasties off those 2 disease and bug prone plants then that’s fine with me. I just found it was too expensive to treat all of my flowerbeds with it. I still may use it on my brugs since they are so prone to critters chomping on them.
I mixed some of the Advanced Tree and Shrub up in the same water as my Miracle Grow ... that Systemic works for 6-9 months here with all our rain...10-12 months other places with less rain. The spray for Roses/Flowers only lasts for about 2-3 weeks...

I used the Bayer 3 in 1 Systemic every 6 weeks as prescribed on the label. And it isn't cheap. About $1.00 per brug for each application. I have several hundred, so it really adds up in a hurry. You can be assured I wouldn't be using it if it didn't work, at that price!
I'm a fan of not treating for something unless there is a problem. For the last two years, I've had very little trouble and have not pre-treated with anything. Last year I sprayed Talstar for the cucumber beetles, mid season, and a few of my plants got a spray of Avid for mites. Had I pre-treated all 150 +, it could have cost me a fortune. Two years ago, I didn't have to spray at all. I did have cucumber beetles, but thanks to Renee, I know how to handle them now. I feel like I've saved a lot of money by not treating until I see a problem. I think it is whatever works best for each person though and there is nothing wrong with being on top of the game. Especially when it comes to bugs.
Shirley...I agree with you on not going all out if there isn't a problem... I find Imidocloprid good for just about any sucking/chewing bug of which there are many here..and when you have the signs, might as well go out with a shotgun than a 22! Tried dealing with each one individually but never could see if I were successful or not...they kept chewing!!!

I guess our cold winters are really good for something. Without them, I'll bet our bug problems would be much worse.
I'll bite, Shirley! What did Renee say to do about the cucumber beetles? Those monsters are my downfall.
Kay
PS. I squish them if I can catch them. Yuck!
Kay, it's the Talstar. Available at Rosemania, I believe. She found that it is one of few things available fto control them and I'll tell you, it really works. I had to many to even try to squish. Up to 8 or 10 inside each brug bloom. They destroyed every bloom I had. Last year was so nice. The blooms remained intact.
I haven't decided how I will handle the bugs this year, but I know for a fact that I will be treating for slugs in advance, not going through slugs again, if I can avoid it, and I don't remember a year when we haven't had them; however, the brugs are the only plants I've ever had that were bothered by them...
i use the rose and garden spray and i luv it...i had a fit when i lost my bottle...i finally found it after i had traveled 50 miles to a greenhouse and found some more there...i came home and found my other bottle...lol.....it seems to work on everything, and hasnt hurt anything i have, even my orchids......good luck

I can't remember exactly which bug was giving me the most trouble when I started using the Bayer, but I do remember that my brugs were being eaten up at the time, and within a week or so of the first application, they drastically improved in appearance. I have so many leaf-eating bugs here, compounded by the fact that I'm in the country... We didn't have a long, hard freeze this year either, so I'm probably going to be once again inundated.
Same here. For me, it's a matter of KNOWING if you live somewhere with heat and humidity, you will be spraying your roses for black spot at least every couple of weeks. The leaves of my perennials that don't go completely dormant, as well as my roses and camellias were getting chewed on by something or other in JANUARY. So I am going out on a limb here and saying that bugs will be an issue this spring/summer. I think it depends on each person's situation- where you live, what your normal problems are, etc. If I had never had an issue before, I wouldn't pre-treat for that bug or disease. I have never had brugs though so I wasn't sure. From what I have read, they tend to be attractive to bugs and slugs so I will likely do the Bayer on them... then again, I will be planting about 15 and not 150! Y'all are crazy! But in a good way. LOL!
Brug Crazy, that is! LOL!!!
Thanks ya'll...I treated my cuttings yesterday and moved them outside. May have to do them again before 6 weeks is up as I barely had enough stuff to mix a gallon. Oh well..this too shall pass.
I don't have a brug yet, but I plan to get one this weekend at a Round Up. I read on one of these forums that somebody uses alfalfa for fertilizer on Brugs. Does anybody have any experience with this?
Here is everything you could possibly want to know.
Get a cup of coffee and a snack..... it's a L O N G thread
A pen & a pad of paper would be good for note taking.
