The manager at the Home Depot I normally shop at also grows brugs, and gave me this tip on how and what he uses. For fertilizer he lets fish emulsion soak in water for a couple of days and for planting he uses Supersoil Cactus/palm potting soil. It's a fast draining mix. The brugs he orders for Home Depot are also potted in the same mix. The picture is of one of his many brugs he has at home.

Fertilizer & soil tips
It looks gorgeous awanda...do you know which one it is? A lovely orange.
Thank you for the tips on potting soil and fertilizer...I will have to try it.
Did you get any tips on pest control? For a plant that is poisonous to humans, the insect world sure love them.
Picturelady, I'm not sure which one this is, but he did give me a 4ft plant of it:-).
I'll ask him about pest control. Since I'm new to brugs, which pest are attracted to it?
Blessings,
Awanda
In my short experience with brugs, I have been fighting slugs, grasshoppers, Chinese Beetles, thrips...and these are just the ones I know about. I drenched with Imidocloprid which seemed to do the trick!
I wonder about the Fish Emulsion, Awanda. The only one I know about is Alaska Fish Fert. and that is almost straight Nitrogen... Does he use a different brand?

Beaitiful brug. Keep us posted. I am interested in soils and pest control.
Carol what I've always used was Safer Fish Emulsion All Purpose Ferilizer, 5-1-1. I get it from Home Depot, of course:-). He uses the same also.
Blessings,
Awanda
...also aphids and white flies and catapillars!!! I have not heard of Imidocloprid before...I will have to look into it!
Merit is Imidocloprid. It can be purchased at Rosemania. It goes a long, long ways. Works on Aphids for sure. Haven't seen one since I used it.

I thought rosemania only sold the avid I couldn't find the merit there.

Never mind I found it LOL
I thought that since brugs were in the same family as tomatoes, you shouldn't use products with tobacco in them. Anyone??? I know someplace warned that if you are a smoker, you should wash your hands well before working with brugs.
Interesting reading: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/pp/notes/oldnotes/vg15.htm
LOL Kin, ain't that the sad truth!! I
Is it Tobacco mosaic? Look at all the bad things tobacco get and may carry I guess. http://www.apsnet.org/online/common/names/tobacco.asp
Gosh Carol and Margie, lucky you guys for not thinking of MITES first. Must mean they have not come to your house yet. And I hope they never do. They are the biggest pain I have ever had. Any brugs you get, spray them first thing in case there are any hitch hikers.
Awanda, wait till your new friend at HD sees the brugs you will pick up around here. I guarentee he has never seen such beauties!
Thank you Brugie for the interesting information. I would think with it being a weak tobacco tea, mixed in with all the other ingredients, it wouldn't be quite the same as using straight tobacco. But I'm not a Master Gardener as Jerry Baker is. As always take what is read with a grain of salt, or should I say a grain of tobacco in this case:-).
Blessings,
Awanda
I would think even a weak solution of tobacco tea which consists of juice from the tobacco would be taking a huge chance of infecting any Brugs sprayed with it with Tobacco Mosaic virus.Certainly not worth taking the chance when there are so many other things to get rid of the critters. JMHO
Please don't use any tobacco product at all on brugs...unless you hate the plant and want it to die... TABOCCO in any way shape or form is no to brugs and many other plants!!!
Hmmm. I am thinking I agree with Snowhermit and cinnabor...especially after reading Brugie's link (very interesting...). TMV seems to be rather prevalent in the Nightshade family (from that article)...
