Sierra Leone Lily 'Fireflash'

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

I just bought this at Kmart about 2 weeks ago, looks a bit tattered but in general good health. I myself hadnt seen this before but the colors of the stems is what really caught my eye. So much color without flowers really makes this plant stand out.
I was really happy the other day to notice new growth already and Im hoping Ill have an offset or two to take to the roundup with me.
How many of you have this one and what did you do to really get good growth out of this and is there a way to force it to make offsets without hurting the plant?

There isnt one leaf on this plant that isnt damaged, Not my doing just from the care it got in shipping and at the store. Cant wait for this thing to grow more so I can cut those things off. LOL

I got a plant several weeks ago that looks just like that, but was labeled 'Mandarin Plant'.

There were 3 plants in the pot which I divided with what appears to be success. They all appeared to be from one plant as they wereVERY close together.

From what I've read about it it needs to befairly cool and doesn't like strong light.

When I divided mine I put them on the floor of my closed-in back porch in an area where the light is fairly blocked. They seem to really like it there.

Check out http://www.twyford.com/showplant.php?plant=103 and http://toptropicals.com/cgi-bin/garden_catalog/cat.cgi?uid=Chlorophytum_orchidanteoides for more info.

I have a large one from over a year ago..it bloomed last summer from the center with star shaped little flowers ..then set a million seeds. I planted a bunch (300) and the little buggers are growing..slowly..but will see if they come true...this plant will NOT spider like other chloropytums, slowly multiplies. I love em.. :-)

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Thats what I read too, Thanks Eclipse, knowing that i have a chance germinating the seeds makes it even a better purchase to me. So far I really like this plant, the colors are beautiful and I know its not going to take over a bigger area like my spider plant. If you get the chance to post a pic of the seedlings that would be great, Id love to see what they look like.

I'll see what I can do.. :-)

I have had one for several months. It has bloomed twice already. The first time, some seeds fell into the pot and now I have some small babies. Mine is in my kitchen window, which faces east. I spritz it daily and it is very happy. See the babies?

Thank you Eclipse and rylaff.

Rylaff that is a great pic, for some reason I thought the seedlings would look more like the parent plant. Im probrably thinking of suckers. I know seedlings look different with the first set of leaves, my brain just decides to go blonde on me, LOL.

heres some of mine...........I only have about 200 of them started and still have lots of seeds.

Holy Moly that's alot of babies. They all look healthy. Do you have any extra seeds to spare for a trade, Eclipse? I was supposed to get some from a garden buddy and I think she forgot again..lol.

Donna email me when I get back from Chicago(Sunday) and I'll see what we can do. :-)

That is a humugous batch of babies. Wow. How long did it take for them to grow to that size?

I really like seeing all the seedlings everyone is growing, alot of work but I know when I have seedlings I get so excited that they grew for me. LOL

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Just a pic of the bigger buds. The blooms seem to only stay open for one day and really are nothing to write home about. Its like this plant thinks its too flashy already so keeps its flowers almost unnoticable.

The seedlings are about a month or so old..slow growers..

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Wow...never knew they were so fertile...I shall have to keep an eye on mine!!!!

Thanks Kyle. :~)

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Kyle I would love to see another pic of those babies about this time next month. I love to see how plant progress and I think that batch of babies is going to grow faster than you think.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Your wish is my command, heres my babies now! even showing color now! :-)

Kyle, I have one of these too with seed pods on it. How do I know when they are ready to harvest?

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Wow they are looking great! I think thats really good for one months growth. It can also give you time for potting up instead of trying to get them all done at the same time to bigger pots.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Liz,the flowers turn a brownish black color when ready..I gently tapped the flowers while holding the plant over a newspaper to catch the seeds.
Draven, I'll probably use them in display beds this summer for work..then dig and pot up this fall.

:-)

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Kyle thats a great idea, gonna be beautiful outside all together like that.

Okay you said the flowers turned brownish black, Im just trying to make sure here(Im blonde so get confused easily at times, LOL) Did you mean seed pods? Because heres what I have on mine after the flowers bloomed and died off. Sorry its fuzzy I didnt have my glasses on when I took the pic.

Thats the seed pods..but wait till they turn brown/black and dry out then carefully crush to open them over the paper.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

That plant actually brings good money here...really dramatic!!! I love them.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Thanks Eclipse. Although I don't think that I'll plant as many as you have.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Im gonna plant as many as I can, its different and super easy to take care of and you get results without having to do anything special(flowers). Then people are gonna start getting gifts, LOL.
Thanks Kyle.
