Black ginger "Midnight"

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I got a near black ginger called Midnight. I won it on ebay from Hirts. I thought it was just going to be a rhizome, but when it got here, it was a plant in a pot with several leaves. Cant wait to grow this one.

What does the bloom look like.

Lisa,
I have had that one several times, well, I probably do still somewhere. It dies back really hard in our zone, and doesn't reappear until May or so and then only puts out several leaves. I am usually a zone pusher, but not possible with this one. Keep it in if you want to keep that foliage from dying back too hard. It may still die back because most zinzibers die back anyway. It is part of their growth cycle. Just a little unsolicited info, hope you don't mind.

No, I appreciate it. I was wondering how it did in our zone. I saw a couple of websites which stated it was zone ten plant. You know I love to push the zones too. I mean I have a silk floss tree growing in my yard!!!! Most people in this area have never seen one of those and they walk past my house and stop to take a closer look. Anyway, I was thinking about keeping it in a pot and bringing it into the greenhouse during the winter (my plan is to get one built this year).

Just says full to part sun and moderate water. Says it can be grown in a pot. I think I might try keeping it in a pot.

Everything I read said shade, but I bought one at Target that said full sun, so I tried that, but the leaves all burned on the edges and turned brown. It is a beautiful, but difficult one to grow. I think definitely zone 9b-10.

It is a filtered shade lover here...tho it gets morning sun in the winter. It actually will take tons of water. Mine hasn't bloomed yet, either...only a year old.

I almost bought one from a nursery here in Houston. They had 5 gallon pots for $14.95!! The blooms are pink, if I remenber correctly. They keep their foilage for the most part here in zone 9a. All of my zingibers kept their foliage this year. I have an "alpinia zerumbet" that had some upper leaf scorch this winter, but for the most part it stays green all year. Pictured is the "alpinia zerumbet" flower stalk. The flowers in the picture are over 9 ft. from the ground!
