CLOSED: Anyone have Salix discolor-pussy willow?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I was at work today and the subject of plants came up. BIG SHOCK! LOL Anyway, an older woman that I work with said she would love to have a pussy willow. I told her I would post on 'my garden website' (I think they get sick of hearing about it. LOL) and see if anyone had some cuttings to spare. I'd be glad to trade something for them but I am not sure what I have at the moment. If you have some to share, could you please let me know? Thanks!

I have a pussy willow tree that will need trimmed in the spring. Would you be interested in those cuttings? It's just an itty bitty tree, but it grows so quickly. Jenny

I have a gigantic tree of pussy willow in the back yard that I am more than happy to cut and send. I started out with three 24 inch cuttings that I got at a market 8 years ago, I rooted them in a plastic gallon jug on my porch, dug a whole, planted them next to the garage, and voila...they grew into a 45 foot tree. No lie.
My dh keeps threatening to trim it back, but I haven't let him yet. I will do it myself if someone will use the cuttings to create some offspring.
Warning....this is a robust strain LOL with lots of catkins each spring

Thank you two for answering so quickly!

I do not know whether what I am going to say is going to sound incredibly intelligent or ignorant. I have corkscrew willow and weeping willow and japanese fantail willow. What I do not have, is plain old shrub type pussy willow. She said she got a cutting from someone once and it turned into a huge tree that later cracked up the floor in her previous neighbor's garage. Ouch! She does not want to do this again. Any search I have done, has mostly pulled up Salix discolor. I do know there are red and black and other varieties. Most of these max out at 15 or 20 feet. She wants a nice, harmless shrub with those lovely catkins. Is this a matter of good pruning or will a certain type stay smaller?

I don't know anything about pussy willows. LOL All I know is mine is a weeping pussy willow tree, and it won't get any taller than I think 6-7 feet. I don't know if cuttings from this would grow a shrub or not.....since it's weeping?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I won't swear to anything here! LOL I believe some weeping willows are grafted while others start as a single stem and are trained to weep. My weeping willow came from a 10" or so cutting and in three years grew into a 20 or so foot tall tree. I had to cut it down last year because I didn't spend enough time training the trunk. I plan to start over. :)

I hope someone else will have the right one, because the one I have has turned into a tree. I think there is one that is native to midwest that is more shrublike, although any can be pruned. I just don't want to be held responsible for property damage LOL
This pussy willow that I have is beautiful, but might grow too large for your co-worker. Sorry.

I have had no problem rooting willows in plain old water or even moist soil. I have read in many places that the water left from rooting willows is very good to use on other plants for rooting.

Ridgeville, IN(Zone 5a)

I have heard that also.

Jackie, will the cuttings from you grow into trees? Or shrubs?

Jenny

Jenny, I can't guarantee either way, but mine did shoot up into tree fomation. I can always take some small cuttings for you, and I have read that all pussy willows can handle pruning to retain desired shape, so maybe that includes size. Let me know, I'd be happy to send.

Jackie, I'd like to try some. It would be interesting to see if I can get it to stay shrub-like. Are you wanting postage for these or a trade? We still have snow here in IN so I haven't had much of a chance to make a list of what I have. I made layout maps last fall of all my gardens......but I've lost them. LOL Jenny

If your still interested in pussy willow I have Pink pussy willow, yes the catkins are a light pink, and it will grow very fast. Just stick in water and it will root, I also have curley willow, branched are curved and curley, starts just as easy.

Hi Annabelle,

I really appreciate your reply. I think I am just going to leave it go and root her some of my fantail willow. I was telling her about the flat, twisted branches and she seemed really interested and excited about them. I don't want her freaking out and worrying about it eating the neighborhood. :) Well, do you know if it will stay bushlike or turn into a tree or is it all in the pruning? LOL Gosh I am so indecisive!

Badseed. Curley willow is a tree, mine is about 20 years old and about 30 feet tall, it started from a cutting I sent my father from Calif, Hummers love it, good leaf coverage, and the local florists buy all I can cut. You don't need to trim it,had upright growth.
