Wondering if anyone grows these
seen some really pretty ones called Red Flash
Florida Sweetheart,, Florida Cardinal. and thought the
leaves would be good for my leaf casting.
some input on these please.

I've grown them beside the pond that we filled in (edited to say it was filled in because it was too shady......the apple tree, beside it, had grown too tall and was making too much shade for waterlilies to grow properly). They like partial to full shade (my experience was nearer full shade the better), moist soil and the soil should be warm before planting out. I started my tubers around this time of year. Water should be cut back gradually near the end of the season. They can be stored as a bulb in dry conditions (can't remember if it should be warm or cool).

I think the veining in their leaves would make for a wonderful cast.

I grew them last year but found it difficult to find the tubers or plants for the new exotic ones. Also found they didn't like the hot dry days we had and certainly don't like the too cool nights - nothing below 10 C. Not enough colour or leaf size for the effort for me so won't be doing them again this year. Will go back to rex and tuberous begonias and coleus.
