Many of you have probably already found this, but as a beginner with Dahlias, this was new to me.
Supporting Dahlias "A NO Stake NO Tie System"
http://www.dahlias.net/dahwebpg/Support/NoStake.htm
It could also be used with many large perennials.
If you look at page 2, you will also see a suggestion to use Florist Plant Sleeves over the supports for a little protection from the elements. I love this idea, as they are just the right size for slipping easily over the supports and making it possible to plant a little sooner. Not a guaranteed method, but probably would work for all but the worst spring weather conditions.
Anyone know were I can purchase some florist plant sleeves?
I've tried ebay and a google search with no luck.
Dahlia Support System
tree-climber- hi - actually I found that site really great- I'll try it in my perennial gardens for sure- my dahlias get so big in the veggie garden that I think I only trust my 6ft tall wooden stakes! (four per plant!) Did you notice Don MacAlisters email address? donmc00@yahoo.com I think you should ask him about the sleeves. I'm not sure I've ever seen them that big......but I'll look - since I shop at florist supply places when I am doing wedding flowers for folks. sjms
thanks sjms ............ I didn't notice his email address, so I really appreciate you pointing that out to me.
I'll email him and ask.
Keep me posted if you find any.
Yep, I used that method and it works excellent. Will do it until something better comes up.
That's great. I will use that with my dahlias this year.
Thanks, this is just in time for use with my new co-op dahlias!
Update....
I emailed Don MacAlister and got this reply:
The plant sleeves are sort of an add on to the inverted cages and I
have to admit that I now start all my dahlias in pots and wait until
the end of May before I plant them out.
At the time I last bought sleeves it was from either American Clay
Works or Denver Wholesale Florist here in Denver. The size on the box
says 13.5"x30"x24" which translates to 13.5" across the top opening,
24" across the bottom opening and 30" from top to bottom. At the time
I paid something over $90 for a case of 500 sleeves.
Hope this helps someone else .....
t-c, can anyone buy the sleeves? belinda
daylily970,
I'm not sure,
Here's a link I was given, but I haven't checked it out yet.
