My DH came home yesterday to smoke billowing out of the greenhouse. The heating lamps we were using to add a little extra heat to the seed beds caught the entire table on fire. We are very lucky we only lost the table and a some plants. Today I went back out and the begonias are all gone. I guess the smoke got them. Be careful. Even wet boards will catch fire.
watch out for heating lamps!
Wow, Ruth. Glad that was the worst damage you received. I've used heat lamps in the little greenhouse. I hung them from the ceiling.
O.K. time for a pity party. Want to know what plants don't like smoke? Brugs. begonias, bouganvillas, ferns, impations, and purple waffle plants just to name a few. The brug leaves shriveled up and dropped off. Guess they will come back with a little TLC. The stems seem all right.
Oh my, you are very lucky. I think I would get an electric heater instead of the lights. I'm sure there have been fires with some of them too. I'm glad it wasn't your home.
I have used these before and you bet you have to be careful. I think they should carry a "BIG" warning because people don't relize just how hot they can get.
I hung mine from the ceiling and made sure they were not to close to the plants, boards, plastic or anything flamable.
I sure am sorry for your loss but I'll bet this is a lesson you won't soon forget, and as Shirley said glad it wasn't your house.

I'm so glad there were only plant injuries!!! I surely hope your brugs make it, good luck!!!
I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your greenhouse and some of your plants, but thankfully your house was undamaged and no one was injured!
Those heat lamps get mighty hot! The warning label should now include: do NOT place near any person, animal or plant! USE EXTREME CAUTION!!
So glad you and your DH are alright!
I am so sorry to hear that this happened to you. Hopefully most will recover and come back.
Oh, Ruth, I am so sorry to hear this...
Glad it was not your home or your entire greenhouse.
Thanks for the warning.
Diane
Oh my that is terrible. Glad it wasn't worse.
I'm so sorry!!!
Judy
OH...my worst nightmare!!! Luckily we don't have to have heaters...but a heatpad in the winter for the nights. I am so sorry for you, Ruth...Cleaning all that up is going to be a messy job!
Carol
I am sorry for this terrible tragedy. Joelle
Oh my! I'm so sorry. Thank goodness it wasn't any worse.
That is sure scary!! I hope your plants recover Ruth! My Mother's name is Ruth. And her last name's initial is M.
sorry for your loss, good thing you caught it before it caused a major disaster. it must have been very scary.
How awful, you poor dear. I pray everything will turn out all right.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss, and the mess you now have to clean up. I don't have much of what you lost but, I do have some brug seeds I have as yet not planted...If and when you are ready I would be more than glad to send you soom, just let me know. Sorry I can't do more. But so glad you are OK cinnaor
HOly Cow! now that's scarey, cause I use the same kind of heat lamps in the dog kennels, each one has his own heat lamp just like yours red lamps too, and their down about 3 feet off the ground hanging from mid air, to keep the dogs warm. and hay on the floor, but the dogs sleep directly under the lamps and haven't had any problems, of course they can run form the fire if it would to happen, how close were your lamps to the table if I can ask? I"m sorry to hear about that. I see the melted seedling trays.

Terrible news...Ruth. Thank goodness nobody was injured except the plants. THEY can always be replaced. At least the damage occurred only in the GH and Not your home.
I am glad your husband came home right in time to catch it before the fire did more damage.
I use neon lamps. They are safer.
they were about 2 feet away
How awful for you - I had no idea those things could get that hot. Glad your DH discovered the fire and no one was hurt. Sending best wishes your way......
Ruth, I just saw this thread. Oh dear. I'm glad that you and your hubby didn't get hurt. You be careful.
Hugs, Donna
