A Prelude to Spring - I Hope

Mukwonago, WI(Zone 5a)

Just came up from the basement where all the brugs have been hanging out since last September. Here was Species getting ready to put on a preview. Its too bad this plant has to be stuck in that dungeon where its beauty and fragrance goes somewhat un-noticed. I thought about hauling it upstairs but That is not an option because I'd probably knock off all the buds before I reached the top of the stairs. The skirts are just beginning to drop...so maybe I should be getting out the old paintbrush - LOL

I think they are telling you they want OUT!! LOL!! What a show they will put on for you once they get out since they are already doing that down there!

Gratiot, WI(Zone 5b)

Wow....and in Wisconsin. Maybe I will have luck with Brugs. Thanks for showing me what they can do up here.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

What beautiful blooms Renee. By the amount of blooms it didn't seem to mind it one bit down in your basement.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow, Renee. Great to see the blooms.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Cool. Wish I had just one brug with buds on it. LOL! Guess I'll still have to wait for spring or summer. She looks great. Remember when I was there a few years ago in Feb. and she was blooming. I could have set up my bed in your basement.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Oh wow!!! I would be tickled with ONE bloom let alone all you have there! Looks great!!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

WOW
What kinda lights are they under?
or are they?

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

So pretty Rene. Spring is getting close and it won't be too long before you will be putting them outside. Meanwhile, enjoy the indoor fragrance!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Renee, that is one more beautiful brug, so very pretty. I don't know how you will ever get it up and out, but what a sight it will be when you do, I cannot wait to see it this summer!!!

Mukwonago, WI(Zone 5a)

CC..... I've been running a 1000 watt MH lamp on a 9 ft. overhead track. So far...it's helped to keep a lot of the cuttings and a few of the full sized brugs alive this winter. I'd like to be able to fertilize and increase the amt. of time the light is on but running it gets to be pretty expensive. Also.... if I fertilize.... I will end up w/ too much growth which will limit the small amt. of free space I have reserved for all the seedlings.

Thanks SherryL.... DH will have to do the hauling-lol. I'm hoping this one (Species) will start blooming earlier than the others once it gets outside.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I lost my Species, Maya and either Butterfly or Whiskers, county agent said it was irregular watering, etc. Your Species amazes me, especially at this time of the year, which tells me one thing for sure, I tried to hard. Not going to do that this year, I keep singing that song to myself...

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Renee, burning that light can get expensive. LOL I was just counting up my gas bill for the greenhouses and the garage greenhouse and was shocked. $841 Wow. I haven't tried to count up the differences all those shop lights made on my power bill.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Man, Ada, that's really high, gas is expensive here but we are all electric, which is more than high enough. When do you start up and stop heating???

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Sherry, it depends on our crazy weather. I keep the temp at about 50 - 55. The garage is 24 x 42, the small greenhouse is 12 X 12 and the big greenhouse is 20 X 30 (I think, give or take a few feet) DH knows what size it is. LOL

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Lordy, Ada, I'm surprised you bill wasn't more, that's lots of space to heat!! What else do you grow in addition to brugs? Do you have a garden too and grow most stuff from seed???

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Sherry, I have a few vines, and different tropicals, a big impatient that i bought and other plants that I brought in last fall to save. I have different types of seeds sown etc. I need to get off this kick of loving plants that aren't hardy here. LOL

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Renee, what a great sight at this time of the year! Your plants look very nice and green.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Woo Hoo! Way to go!!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

If my brugs make it wintering outside, Ada, or even half of them, I'll be thrilled. Just don't have the energy to bring as many as I have inside every winter - and, winter is so short here, that it would really be a monumental effort...

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Sherry, I hope they make it. In your zone, they should if you have them mulched good. The few I left out are gone.Ii dug around a few of them and the roots are rotted.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I'm scared to dig around mine, I'm not ready for the news, if it's not good. Boy, I hate yours were rotten Ada, what a disappointment...I'm afraid I'm expecting too much...

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Sherry, they were oldies and I have backups or they would never have stayed outside. I'd have found room even if DH had to move out of the bedroom. LOL

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Beautiful Renee ... looks really healthy & happy!!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Hahaha, Ada! Before I broke my ankle, I slept by the window and the seedlings - now, hubby has to sleep on my side because of my stroller. Last night, he said, don't worry about closing the shutters, the brugs are so high they block the sun, lol, but true!!!!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

They'll be pretty blooming and the sunshining through them at the window. LOL

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Wow Renee she is loaded down. She looks like she is very happy in the basement

Mukwonago, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks Everyone..... I guess it could be said that she's a 'basement dweller' - LOL
I've hit the flowers w/ some pollen and am praying that at least One of these marriages ends up with a pregnancy. In fact..... I'm on my knees !!!
The season here is so darned short. Most of the time .... if I'm lucky enough to get any pods ... they never have enough time to mature. Hauling big plants inside is not an option because I don't have a lot of growing space.
Getting this kind of a head start is about the most exciting thing that's happened around here in a long, long time.
