I didn't even know it had a bud. Unlike the others I have, this banana blossom is pointing upright and is more yellow than pink. It has little bananas forming.
Basjoo is blooming
How cool! Do bananas bloom at a certain time or age or size or only under the right temperatures? What makes them bloom?
My friend who has a tropical fruit farm said they can bloom at any time. She said when they have grown a certain amount of leaves they flower and that varies from plant to plant.
I always thought if you cut the leaves off the plant, it delayed flowering but I'v tried both ways and it doesn't seem to matter. Someone said temperature had to stay above 50 for them to bloom, well this basjoo went thru 26* at Christmas with no covering over it and two orinocos were just coming into bud and continued to flower(the one we covered with lights did MUCH better). I do fertilize them regularly.
It looks so chubby!
Thank you for the answers Susie! My Orinoco is over 10 feet tall and cramped over and sending out leaves in the garage. LOL I'm wondering if it will ever flower! What do you feed yours?
Whatever is handy, lol. It gets citrus, avocado, azalea or whatever kind of food I'm using that day. Right before the flower comes out, it makes one very short, stubby leaf, then the flower grows.
