Common Stock 'Vintage Rose'
Matthiola incana

This is a single 'Vintage Rose' bloom. Some plants produce a double bloom as seen in my other photo.

OOh my another one for my "must try out" list!

This color of stock bloom is my favorite. The 'Vintage Rose' seed and most other stock cultivar seeds produce 2 types of plants ... those that have single blooms like this one and those that have double blooms like the other photo I posted for this plant. I had always wondered why some of the stock plants I purchased in the same transplant packs of six had single blooms instead of double blooms. When planting from seeds, as the seedlings come up if you want only double blooms you need to keep the seedlings with yellowish-green cotyledons (first leaves of a seedling that emerge). Discard the seedlings with dark green cotyledons which will produce single blooms. Thanks for your comment.

What a great tip, htop! Thanks so much!! Is Vintage Rose readily available in seed catalogs/commercially?

II have searched and searched, but have found no seed source for 'Vintage Rose' by itself. I have found several seed sources that have the 'Vintage Series' stock as mixed seeds containing the various plants with different bloom colors including 'Vintage Rose' (at least it looks like 'Vintage Rose' in the photos). I wish I had known you would want seeds. I just cutoff several old bloom stalks, but I disposed of them. :o( I will save some ripened seeds for you, but by the time they ripen, it may be too late to start them. Of course, you live where it is much cooler than here so maybe they would have a chance to bloom. I don't know if my favorite nusrery still has some transplants. I bought these quite some time ago. I will check for you and would be happy to buy you some and ship them to you if they do.

That would be great, htop, but I would only agree to it if you permit me to pay for them and shipping. I tried growing Matthiola from seeds last year and they got big and nice, but didn't get a single flower. Maybe if I start with transplants they will perform as expected!

I always grow them from transplants that are blooming when I buy them so I know exactly what I am planting. I'll check this week and send you an email.
