Experts, need your help please! Buds dropping...

Joseph, OR(Zone 5a)

I need your help! I was so proud of myself, I had two little Brugs that finally "Y'd" and sprouted little buds! Yea! So, they were doing fine, and then one morning, I noticed one of my buds laying on the floor. The stem on the bud had shriveled and the bud fell off. This was the bud lowest on the plant. Well, two days later, the one above that did the same. And them just today, I saw the bud on top of that one, stem shriveled. All I had to do was touch the bud and it fell right off. This bud was about 1.5" long. And this one is very puffed! Even has drops of water in the bud. Looks like its about ready to blow up! The leaves on both plants look just fine, except for the bottom leaves, a little yellow around the edges. No problems with pests, just the fungus gnats, not to many of them. I had the brugs under grow lamps (flourescents) all winter. Just brought them out and put them in a sunny south windoe the other day. The bud dropping problem started while under the lamps. The Snow Cone is about 12" high from the new growth on the cutting and the Unk Pink is about 8". They didn't get fed all winter. Just started two days ago with Algoflash All Purpose (4-9-14) at half strength. Can anybody help? I was so excited to get my first blooms, but lost them all, one by one. If you need anything else, just ask. Looks like the shriveling starts at the base of the bud stem.

Thanks so much all!
J

I have had this happen if I move the plant. Seems a difference in temperature or intensity of light will make them drop. It is also still winter so any flowers that hang on is a real gift. Do not worry, I bet as soon as spring is in the air, you will get a load of new buds! It will happen fast too! I just know how disappointed you must feel. I have been there more than once myself!

wondering if you overwatered. if the buds had water in them i am sure thats not a good sign from all i have read here.

hopefully someone can help you figure this out.

i am sorry you lost te buds.

I just had two 3" & 5" long buds on HDW. Upstairs 70+ degrees, under lights. SO...getting dry, had to water plant, went real easy, didn't overwater it. Both dropped off. When I opened them, they were fully formed, long tendrils/double, but wet inside. Stem was still green and wasn't dry. This is one I have seen before, bloomed all last summer, but was a real disappointment!

J, mine did the same thing. The only thing I can think of is moving them in front of the window. It got cold. And that was a week ago and the last one that dropped was last nivght. I watered with Peters 20 x 3. Night before last and lost a bud about 2 inches long. Watered again last night with the same and lost another one this morning.

They seem to know spring is here and are using up water real fast. It does need to be put in a bigger pot. It is in a 4 incher. But, I couldn't re-pot it after it started getting buds. Now I am going to even though it has 2 big buds left.

Hibiscus, what is HDW? Well, like Kell said, spring is getting close.

I gather, from what you guys are telling StvNicksFan, that I should let my Rosamond, covered in buds, bloom in the bubbler, prior to potting her up - assuming I want to see the blossoms - that's a question. I will say this - every time I've done anything 'drastic', assuming moving a pot to a different window is drastic, the brug has 'complained'. So, this growing season, I'm going to try to be more gentle with my rearranging, feeding, debugging, watering, etc. NicksFan, I'm so sorry about your buds, but, as you see, I've been there too!!

J, I had all of my buds fall from a brug that I moved so it could get more sun in the fall. Then in the winter the same brug got buds in the GH and they all fell...that time she wasn't moved or anything. Now she has buds and I did move her out of the GH but they seem OK. I kind of think the buds before this were a little pre-mature for her. She seems to really want to put them out...and I am sure when they are ready to be maintained on the plant and ready to bloom they will.

You just don't know what and why mother nature acts like she does sometimes...but I am sure she has her reasons.

Hang in there....in no time it will probably have more buds again!

Been there too...Margie

J, I am sorry for your loss!!
Last summer, my first brug to make it to the blooming stage was loaded with something like 20 buds. I was sooooo excited, I wanted to sleep in the yard next to this plant, I swear. I guarded her with my life from all the neighborhood visitors, like it was a painting at the Louvre. I was so proud, I felt like charging admission just to look at these buds. The afternoon that I was sure they were going to start to open, all of them dropped. Once again, I cried, yes, I actually cried, just as I did every time I lost a plant or rooted cutting to over-watering. I felt like a two-year old whose first ice cream cone ended up on the hot pavement. It took about 3 more weeks, but she made another go of it, and the sight and smell of the blooms was so worth all of my tears.
The good news is that these DG experts are right, different factors can cause them to drop and it is crushing. It's not uncommon. Maybe the move did it, but don't beat yourself up over it. I just know that you are going to have some knock-out blooms in no time at all!

J: Hawaiian double white. I did not move it, all I did was water it. I did not overwater. They would have dropped without any water, so bad if you do and bad if you don't. Guess I didn't need to see blooms now anyway, just would have made it easier to get through until spring. We'll make it!

Hey All,
Thanks so much for the tips and advice. I know now to be cautious just in case, to move while getting ready to flower. I have just one bud on a Grimaldi, lets hope it hangs on there! My Grimaldi is about 6" tall and JUST Y'd. As well as the Snow Cone, so I guess they could have been just to small still to flower.

I was wondering, what kind of growth can I expect in one season? Will my 12"ers grow to be 5'ers by the end of summer? I really want them to be grown into trees this summer. Am I just pushing it though? Seems like they've woken up all of the sudden. Their growth has been fast indoors the past couple of weeks! If they grow this fast, I maybe in for a real sursprise huh!?!?!

Thanks again for all the help. Like hibiscus said, we can wait. The Tete e Tete daffs are out now, so that gives me something to look at!

Thanks!

Mine are really taking off now too. In the last week it seems that the amount of foliage in the gh has doubled. Some are trying to grow through the ceiling (I have a low ceiling, shed style). I can hardly get in there now. I have to duck down and crawl around.

About bud drop, last fall my Maya was just loaded. They slowly dropped off, was so heart breaking to go out and find them on the ground. About half of them hung on and bloomed. I guess it was the change in temp or humidity or something, I didn't move it or do anything different.

Ahhhh! I saved ONE Grimaldi bud! I know it looks nothing like the pics you all post, but I'm proud of my first! Can't wait till it opens so I can smell it! Whoo Who!!!!
