Brugmansia Secrets?

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi,

I tried my hand at growing one of these plants once. I had it in an 8 inch pot. It grew well for a while, and just simply kicked the bucket. I live in Kentucky, and our summers here are a little less than perfect for growing some plants. I don't know if that had something to do with it. I had it in full sun until mid-day; it was in part-shade for the remaining day-light hours. Any and all advice is welcome to help me succeed in growing these beauties. Thanks!

Hi rock!!! It could be any number of things. Do you still have it?? If you do, you could take it out and clean the old dirt off and, if there are still living roots, cut some of the old stuff away, repot it and give it morning sun (your location - morning sun/afternoon shade, sounds good), fertilize it lightly, building up to a good dose, water as needed, and see what happens. Good luck!!! You are new to this forum, huh? WELCOME!!

Don't give up because you lost one plant. My advice would be to put it in a bigger pot when you get another one. I grow mine in 20 gallon pots and they still require water once or twice a day when they are mature and blooming. I'll bet it was just so rootbound that the pot couldn't hold enough moisture to keep it alive. Do try again. When you are first successful and have blooms, you will be glad you did.

I threw it in the trash. I was disgusted at the time. I will have to buy a new one!

rock, one time I threw some seeds that didn't germinate on a compost pile and later in the summer I found a perfect 2 foot seedling and three little ones...along with a brug that I thought was dead, that had several branches and covered in leaves...brugs really proved, to me, that it ain't over till it's over...

Sherry, I too have given up on Brug seeds and used the soil for potting something and had little Brugs to come up in the pot. I noticed a couple in a pot yesterday that I had planted some bulbs in. LOL The first time this happened several years ago, I thought it was poke weed that had came up in a pot and was about to pull it up and realized it was a Brug.

Ditto. I have little brugs coming up in the oddest places!

I have to be careful where I throw my prunings. I did a BIG prune on the Jamaican Yellow, cut it down to 1 foot above the ground and the 3 year old trunk was 3" in diameter. I usually leave the pruned material below the plant so the decomposition fertilizes the plant and later haul off the branches. Well, JY has rooted there...just lying on the ground. Yet...some "wanted" cuttings just seem to cause fits!

BTW - JY is filling out and better than ever!!!

Carol, I think it was Kell, last year, that gave one of her big brugs a haircut, a real summer cut, and it came back bigger and better than ever. Since mine die back when it freezes, that's all the haircut they ever need, whew!!!

Isn't it fun, Ada, to find babies in the most unexpected places. Like you Carol, it seems that the throw aways do great and the ones I pet don't always appreciate it. Seems like I'd learn, huh?

Sherry, it would be nice if I'd known what the cross was. LOL

Oh, Ada, don't remind me!! While I was in the hospital, my hubby's precious, sweet, sweet, 92 year mom thought my plants would perish if the bags were not removed, it still 'hurts' to remember - she thought they were close to exploding because they were so puffed up. So, she had the bags, all neatly labeled, including the name of each cross and the hybridizer, removed and tossed. I'm over it now, but it's taken a while, at least they continued to grow. I can laugh about it now, but, believe me, it's taken a while, whew!!

LOL Sherry. All that help and you didn't appreciate it.
