Large clumps of Phaius are especially dramatic.

The nun orchid I bought last summer bloomed great. I lefted it in my garden and mulched it. The leaves turned dark over winter freeze. I live in Texas zone 7/ft worth.
I just trimmed the leaves to the ground. Will it come back? I see yours in the ground like mine. What do you do in the winter? I love this plant. Is it a perennial?
I really like the photo of your garden. I grown many tropical plants in my garden during the summer and bring some in for the winter like Bird of Paradise (orange/purple) I had them in the ground but dugg them up and put in pots to bring into the house for winter. New leaves and some old blooms still on them 3-5-2011. I think I will put them outside but keep them in pots to continue to protect them from our winter freeze. Crazy weather here last 2 years. Warm mostly with about 5 to 10 days freeze for entire winter!

Please tell me the other plants in the beautiful pic of your garden. They look so green and healthy. Are they planted in pots or ground? What do you do in the winter?

I just ordered about 60 lenten rose any suggestions besides shade?

Thanks for any information.

I hope you are still on Dave's Garden. You have the beautiful tropical garden. I live in Texas. I have created areas of shade with plants in order to plant a tropical garden. I have 3 birds of paradise which I bring into the house in the winter. Should I put them back in the ground for spring/summer? It produced green leaves recently inside but the leaves are not strong they fall over?? What to do?

Also I just bought 5 Nun Orchids. I hope to propagate them after they finish blooming.
Any suggestions? Do you keep your plants in your picture in their pots and plant pots in the ground outside?

How do you keep they so green and so many blooms. Healthiest garden I have ever seen.

I would love to know the names of the plants in your picture. This is exactly the garden I am trying to create.

Thanks for any info you can share.

Sincerely

Okay. I am specifically interested in the exact species of orchids shown in this exquisite picture. Can I buy these exact orchids? I've tried to research Nun's Orchid, Nun's Cap Orchid, Chinese Ground Orchid, Red Crane Orchid, Swamp lily, Veiled Nun Orchid and Phaius tankervilliae, but come up with multiple pictures of flowers and foliage that don't look like the ones in this picture. Can you tell me the specific species name and/or how to order?
Thank you.

Hi, I too love these orchids. The Common name is Nun Orchid, Phaius tankervilliae. They display blooms for 8-12 weeks from April to June. Then their beautiful leaves stay green until the first frost.

I recently read that after the blooms have died if you cut the stem between the bloom and the node below it and plant it horizonially in peat most and soil they will grow new orchids. I am trying this now. Keep it moist.

I bought mine at Calloway Nursery in Arlington Texas 76006. However if you go to www.ask.com I think several sites may sale them. They are available now at Calloway's in Arlington, Tx.

I planted one in my garden last year and it stayed for forever even after the blooms finished. I wish I had brought it into to the house. I purchased 4 last week and plan to plant them in their pots outside and dig them up and bring them into the house in the winter. Good luck.

Check at ask.com how to propagate them it will tell you.
