Does anyone know how Cup and Saucer vines do in Texas? I bought some seeds a couple of months ago and now they are pretty little seedlings. Will they survive our heat? Any advice will be appreciated :-)
Thanks
Cup and Saucer (Cobaea scandens)
I too bought a cup & saucer vine (Cobaca scandens) and hope it does well. I'll watch this thread to see your responses siggy.
I just bought seeds. Never grown it in TX before either.
I started some in the Greenhouse two years ago. I started them in November, and by the time it was time to plant them outside, they were huge! Most were 6 ft. tall, or taller. I planted them on the east side of the house. That year, we had terrible grasshopper invasion, and I went out one morning to find that grasshoppers had bit each vine down near the soil and ruined every last one.
I never got to see the blooms. I cried. I'd been waiting for those blooms all winter, and all Spring...
I do know that it roots easily once you have a plant, and that the seeds can tend to absorb too much water and rot. So, make sure your soil isn't too wet, and more on the dry side. Some people recommend inserting the seed into the soil like a coin in a slot. Half of the seed sticks up above the soil, and the other half down in the soil, like a coin halfway through a slot. This is supposed to help it not get too water logged...
Good luck!
I'm going to try them again this year, but spread them out in different areas, to increase my chances of them making it...and test which is the best spot for them.

Seedpicker,
that story is so sad! I had read about the sideways planting thing and it worked well. I have extra seedlings if you would like a few.

That is very sweet of you! let me see if I can get some going. If not, I'll be hollering! lol....

My Cup and Saucer (Cobaea scandens) are about five feet tall now. Any body out there know when they bloom?

Congrats, David! That is beautiful!

That is absolutely gorgeous!
I am so happy for you!
Tell us more! What sun position did you plant them in? Did you start them indoors? I'm guessing from your original post that you started them around end of January?
wow...I've tried several times and never had a bloom, so nice to see that you have one, and such a great photo of it.
Thanks for sharing. I think I'll just click on it, and stare a while...
Did you plant all your little seedlings? Do you have a broader picture of the merry little bunch?

Siggy, what a great photo of a beautiful bloom. Thanks for sharing it. I would love to add this vine to my landscape; but I don't know if it will survivie the heat. Yours looks like it is doing wonderfully.
Thank you for the details...I am off to mark my calender for next year, to start some of these in January. East is what I've heard recommended before, but thank you for confirming...
Any chance you could post a larger view of the plant, so we could see how big it got and what kind of coverage it provided?? Pretty-please?

Just looked in the plantfiles database, and not many good pictures of this flower in there...many pictures of seedlings and some of plants, but few of the actual blooms...
you might want to consider adding your photo!
Also, I think the vine forum would really like to see your photos, too!

Siggy....you've done great, that's a beautiful flower. I started one this year and it died. :>( Hope to see you in the seed trade forum this fall with lotssssss of seeds to trade. I had my plant in full sun and I think it got to much water. I'll try again next year. Thanks for sharing your picture and knowledge on how you've had success growing it.

Yes, that helps...It gives me a better idea of what kind of coverage it has...that is about how mine looked before the grasshoppers chewed them at the base, lol...
Also good that you mentioned it is in a pot...root restriction always matures a plant more quickly...I've had the same exact plant in the ground not bloom until after a much younger one that is in a small pot...It probably would have waited about another month, or so, to bloom had it been in the ground...
Did you do that so you could bring it in for the winter??

That is a very nice looking vine!!
John
