Anyone grow grapes??

North Saanich, Canada

Hi everyone. When we bought our acreage 5 years ago, it came with a grape vine growing over one patio. Not ever having dealt with grapes before, we have pruned and that's about it. The grapes are green and I think probably for wine as they are pretty tart. We don't use them for wine, but found a great recipe for a green grape pie.
For the last two years, the leaves got a weird malformation on some of them, but us uninformed grape people did nothing about it, and of course, don't know what it was.
Do grapes require dormant oil, and do they require any other spraying??

My folks have had grapes at 2 of the last houses they lived in. I know my dad pruned lots and lots, but I don't think he did much else. I'll email him and ask.

I grow them, the "Concords".........last September, oodles were on the vines and boy, did they taste yummy! I also weave the clipped canes after fruiting, through the trellises, for vines and roses to grow through...I also make jelly with the rest of them if they don't get eaten...E.

Thanks ladies. Linda, I will interested to see what your dad has to say. Roselaine, thanks. I never thought of jelly. We haven't had a large crop with them, so will see what happens this year. Do you spray with dormant oil, or with anything else?

Is this what the leaves looked like on your grape vine?

Hi Glenda, I talked with my dad. He prunes them severely in the fall. Also says he gives them a couple of shots of 20-20-20 during the growing season, and when you see the bunches start to form, remove most of the leaves on that stem except for the 2-3 closest to the bunch of forming grapes. He doesn't spray them with anything, or use dormant oil. They live in Comox BC, so similar weather to us.

Good luck with them. Oh and by the way, I hope they are high enough up off the ground. I don't know if the deer would like them, but racoons sure do.

Pam, nope, that's not what the leaves look like. It's almost like an indentation in the top of the leaf, and looks sort of embossed ont he bottom. Several areas like that on one leaf. I have tried to find something on the internet, but havent' come up with anythign so far.
Thanks.

Linda, thanks. I didn't know about removing the leaves on the stems. I will have to remember that. I have seen the deer eating some of the lower leaves, but I think most everything is too high up for them. They are trained over the top of a patio on the other end of the house. Have never seen raccons around there either, although we know they wander through the yard!!!
As a matter of fact, a couple of years ago, we had a raccoon go into the other house through a broken cat door. Dog went wild. No one was there that night, so we didn't want to fiddle around with it. Turned all the lights on, left the door open, and it was gone in the morning, thank goodness. Cat door has been replaced, but guess what??? Broken again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing like bumping into a furry little little bandit in the middle of the night on your way for a tinkle... LOL
