Crocosmia 'lucifer' advice needed

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

I just bought a pack from the nursery yesterday and they look like they will be beautiful. Bulbs are 1.5 inches in diameter so I hope they'll bloom this year. I'd love to get some advice how to grow these guys as I have no experience with them yet.

Wow! The bulbs I got last spring were about 3/4" diameter, and most bloomed. I planted them about 4" deep in a hole that had a tsp. of bone meal then a dirt cover ovr the bone meal. Zone 6b.

Hmmmmm......1.5 inches in diameter, he? That is awfully large....where did you buy them?

Anyhow, bulbs half that size will flower. Do plant them in an area that gets lots of sun. Enjoy.

I bought them at my local nursery (Portland Nursery) and measured a couple with a ruler--1.5 inches on the dot. In fact, I just went and re-measured one of them. I got their last pack left. All they have now are much smaller ones for $.50 each. I have most of the planted now and they are in areas that will receive plenty of sun all summer long.

The packaging said to plant them 6" deep, but anywhere else that talks about these guys says to plant them 3-5 inches deep so I hope I didn't plant them too deep. How far apart should I space these guys? In one area, I planted them with a bunch of flowering allium. Is this a good idea? I've never grown flowering allium before either.

They'll find their way upwards. 5 bulbs per square foot is OK, but then I always say that you can do in your garden you see fit as long as you do not plant them like little soldier in a row, unless it is in your cutflower garden.

There is no golden rule what you can plant with what. Just wait and see how it looks and if you do not like it, change it.

Anyone know how/when to plant the seed?
I got some in a trade and haven't a clue!

I received these bulbs in a trade last year. They also gave me a nice display of flowers. Linda

I planted mine two weeks ago and while snooping around the beds, I accidently dug up one of the corms. Lots of new growth already! These guys don't waste any time!
