Urgent! Need input-have a loosed pit bull in our yard

Hi There...

My hubby had our dogs out for a run in the field and he encountered a young looking male pit bull. It's dragging its leash as if it must have gotten loose. It appears friendly (we're cautious) and we got him inside our rear fenced in yard.

We don't have animal control here....would have to call the police to come get him and transport him to the area humane society. I hate the thought of someone not thinking about calling the humane society once they notice hes missing and he'd end up a goner....but do you think thats what we should do? We certainly can't keep him long enough to post an ad in the paper because of our dogs.
