Hello from a New York gardener

Whitney Point, NY(Zone 4b)

Hi everyone, I just found this wonderful site today. Didn't take but a minute to decide to join! I have 5 acres in the country, zone 4 or 5, depending on who you ask. I hope to start selling at our farmers' market in 2006. Doing lots of legwork this last couple of years. I planted an orchard of apples and pears, a dozen blueberry bushes, I have a huge garden area of mostly raised beds, have laying hens for eggs, and am starting two beehives in May. I hope to supplement my retirement (years off) in any number of ways!

Howdy! I just joined yesterday. My husband and I just moved from NYC (suburbs) to Poland, NY. Arborday.org says it is zone 5. We have 70+ acrea with 1/3 wood lot. I am 39 and have an 8month old son. Your projects sound EXACTLY what I want to do here. What source did you use for your orchard?

Hi Monica! All my fruit trees come from Schlaback's in Medina NY. They don't have a website, so I'll give you the # and you can call for a catalog. I've ordered from them 3 years now, and I love the service and the trees. (585) 798-6198.

Thanks for the info HilltopDaisy! Will call them today.

Hi, HilltopDaisy, and welcome! I could hardly believe it when I saw your address in the member listing, because I used to live in Whitney Point (best by a damsite!) when I was a teenager. My folks lived on the "Back Road to Lisle" (now known as West Main Street). My dad was an avid gardener and coaxed a lot of things to grow there that weren't supposed to, although there was the occasional disappointment, like late frosts destroying the magnolia buds just before they were about to open. It's a lovely area and I do miss it sometimes! Have fun on Dave's Garden website.

Welcome HilltopDaisy,

I knew that Whitney Point sounded familiar, but had to look it up on the map. I believe I spent some time there on retreats while a student at Ithaca College many years ago. (That's before I went to grad school and met a Canadian).

I'm a zone 5a in Ottawa and would be surprised if you were colder than we are here. It sounds as though you have big plans for your gardens. I'm sure you'll get lots of help and ideas here.
