brown leaves on var. bella

Abbotsford, BC(Zone 8a)

Hi all:

I had a question about a variegated bella that was doing great under fluourescent lights indoors. It even bloomed for me not long ago and was sprouting new growth. Now, it seems to be dropping some leaves and no more new growth. The leaves start turning brown and shriveling up at the tips, works its way down the leaf and then drops off on a perfectly okay looking vine. No yellow, just straight brown and drop and they aren't old leaves either. I am perplexed as it was doing so well and it also sits right next to my green bellas which are blooming and continue to grow fine - they all have the same conditions, light, soil mix etc. I had transplanted it awhile ago slightly up from a 4" pot to a 5" pot and isn't sitting wet all the time nor am I letting dry out to bone dry as I know they like it on the moist side. This was occuring before i transplanted too. I would of taken a pic of the leaves but through them out before i thought of posting this question. It just seems that the var. version maybe is a bit more picky? This is a plant that i started from another that had spider mites and i tossed it. Now, i keep everything misted quite frequently throughout the day when i can and i don't see any signs of mealies or mites on any hoyas around it or the var. bella itself....thanks in advance

Yes...the variegated form of H. bella is really picky!

Try changing the location...not such bright light for the variegated one...I keep mine in the shade but the indirect light is bright.

Could it be a fertilizer burn? Did the roots look OK when you repotted?

You might take some cuttings to restart just in case....

Wish I could help more.

Hi Carol,

Thanks for the quick answer. YOu might be on to something with the fertilizer. I will back off on it and take some more cuttings and hope for the best. I will also change where its located and see if it helps. Maybe try some natural light by the window, it has been stationed under the fluourescents all fall and winter but it seemed to do good there so i kept it there. The roots did look fine when i transplanted it but maybe the fertilizer is an issue. That never even crossed my mind. Thanks again, it helped :)
