It's covered in buds from head to toe so should be really bright in a few weeks. Mine is about eight feet tall. I read it eventually gets about 15 feet.

Metrosideros collina 'Springfire' starting to bloom
That is sooooo cool!

Beautiful!
Beautiful! You'll take another photo later, right?
I love this look. You can't beat those cheery red flowers. They are very similar to the Caesalpinia californica that I have, and I think you have that one too. I also have the red-flowering Callandra which is about to bloom.
is there a pink calliandra (sp?)
Yes, vossner, there is a pink calliandra. There are red, pink, and white ones.
Hi Vossner, Carter is right. Logee's sells all three colors: http://www.logees.com/store/ The dwarf pink one is called Calliandra emarginata, and the pink one with a white center is Calliandra Surinamiensis. Mine is the red Calliandra haematocephala. Here is mine today:
All I can say is wow!!

Beautiful pictures, Ron. You've done a great job with the landscape.
Hey, Ron? Do you cut back your Calliandra and, if so, what time of year do you do that?
Jen, I never cut any of my Calliandras back. I like 'em just the way they are.
In fact the only time I cut certain plants or bushes back is when they are invading on another, nearby plant.

Thanks. Mine are looking a bit scraggly but in general I like to let plants Be.
My Caesalpinia gilliesii is starting to set buds also--although it's a little later than yours because I trim mine back in December. It doesn't have thorns Clare. I'm pretty sure that's what it is.

They are gorgeous
can they grow in pots?
CC, which one: the Metrosideros collina 'Springfire' or the Calliandra or the Caesalpinia? I sort of went off topic. Sorry about that. I think you can grow the Calliandra and Caesalpinia species in a pot at least for awhile, but they do tend to get large.
The Metrosideros is the one I'm in love with.....
