The other thread on this is so long, so thought I would start another. I wanted to ask a quick question. I bought the rabbit chow complete. It has a little salt as the last ingredient. Can I still use it and will the salt hurt my plants?
Thanks for any info.

Alfalfa Pellets
Best to only use straight AP, not bunny food....the salt could easiliy build up and harm or down right kill your plants.....over time.
You really should break down and read the other thread, it may be long but there is some very good inof there.
Hi Rikerbear,
The store I went to did not have the straight alfalfa pellets, so I bought this. I have been reading the other thread, but didn't see anything about salt. I guess I'd better go back and read again. I'll try to find a neighbor with bunnies for the bag I have. Thanks for the information.

Peg I don;t rememebr a specific discussion on the other thread about salts....but 'additional' additives has been mentioned as not being needed and or good for the plants.
Hope you find the plain ole AP
Peg. Find a "feed store" in your area that sells horse food. They should have a 50 lb bag. I know thats alot but you can keep them in a rubbermaid container with the cover on loosely.
I'm still wondering how fast salt could build up when it's .25 -.75 of one percent. I also have sand that doesn't hold anything well but a good root system, I'm going to use the rabbit pellets I already have and not worry.
There is a certain amount of salt in even the air here, being close to the Atlantic Ocean. My source of $ is limited right now, but my kitchen and garden pantrys are full. Its time to use it up and wear it out here. lol
I wish I had pure Alfalfa, even fresh, which is a thought, grow, chop, brew.
I had mentioned on the previous thread that I was using alfalfa tablets from the Health food store.

At a feed store, you should be able to find alfalfa cubes in a 50-pound bag for less than $7.00. I would recommend using only straight alfalfa on your plants, with no additives.
I printed out the lasdt post on this, and I am quite interested in the AP and will probably go out and get some to try sounds wonderful.
Well, MaVie specifically said AP with mollasses. I didn't know they put that in rabbit pellets. Horse pellets I can see. Kind of like Omaline. Jeanette
Jnette...MaVie printed the label on her AP and it was exactly like the Rabbit Chow I bought. With salt as the last ingredient, very low percentage. I think I will use this until I find straight AP. My label states Molasses as an ingredient as does MaVie's. Her brugs looked great, right now my brugs look a bit droopy after the winter, so this should be a good test.

Is it possible that the molasses in the AP are agricultural molasses, which I've never been able to locate...
Interesting thread! I have been asking around the Extension Service about it...no reason for it not to work, especially when mixed with another fertilizer with some N in it. The pellets will have to break down before the N is released, and in order to do that, it will use available N in the area. Once broken down, it will nourish at root level and provide good organic matter.
At least that is what I have been told....
Problem is...it is way pricey here. Cattlemen use it for "special treats" for their horses!!! But I am working on finding something less expensive to use.
Thanks, MaVie, for starting this!!!

Peg, I would think your brugs have a right to look kind of droopy coming out of winter. LOL MaVie's were 3 months later, so you should be able to catch up. Jenette
