anyone know or any ideas where I can get a red brug, would really like to have one.
Red Brug
you can bid on one in ebay, they are not the best looking brug, also it will not tollerate very warm temps, and I have heard they are hard to grow
If you find one you better hide it and yourself because we will all be chasing you, lol!!! There are some beautiful dark pinks, but, if there is a consistently red, blooming brug, I have not seen it, but I surely hope it's on it's way...
Get some seeds from Whatcom Seed Co., Seedrack, in Washington State. I understand, and correct me if I am wrong, it's been known to happen, that they grow true to color from seeds, but don't like cuttings????
Jeanette
well leave it to me to want something i can't get LOL. thanks everyone for the info,
The only really red brugmansia is B. sanguinea, which is picky about it's climate. I don't really know much about it other than it won't grow in my climate - which is why I've never learned too much about it. I think it likes cooler temps and low humidity.
Surely, someone else will come along with more specific information for you, though.
The only near RED brug is a sang. and thats not even full red. There are at this time no real full red brugs.....as there are at this time no true BLUE brugs....If and when someone gets one watch out for an explosion. And who ever does it will be really sort after.
Everyones' new best friend, LOL!
Doris that one does look red, lots of the sangs look more orange to me. I wonder if they are actually red red. Maybe Liz or Jeanne have a red one they can post a pic of. They have the most sangs of any member I know.
Kell I thought it looked the best red I have seen. (pictures) and this one has a few days to go on the bidding
And if you could get a lipstick red bearded Iris.... you'd have all the greenhouse and brug money you'd ever need...
Really red African Violet also.
I tried to grow red Sang, had it 3 yrs. Never bloomed, finally lost it to spidermites. Never did get to see it bloom, but I DID keep it alive here. Wasn't easy!
I have one growing out of fifteen seeds, hope it lives just to see if maybe here it will bloom
Well Kell, Your Brugs are so outstanding why not create some red for us LOL. I am green with envy when I look at your pic's, Ah someday I dream.
It's a givin that there are red sang. .. And true they are brugs....The thing is looking for a red brug of more common type shape if common is the word..Because the first person to get a red or blue brug is going to be quite popular.
Yes, Liz, that is a red one! Very nice. I have 3 Vulcanicola and nothing to pollenate with, course they have never bloomed for me either.
Liz thanks for the pic, but couldn't help but notice the water in the background, is this where you live, if it is how wonderful.
liz do you have any cutting from this brug, I would like to get some if you do.
LIz that one is just too beautiful. What a great color!
Ok, Guys, I need some answers here. My Versi-Pink has about a dozen buds. They are growing pretty good, maybe 1 1/2 inches. Now, today I noticed 3 of the new ones only about 3/8 inches long have shriveled up. The only thing I do, other than water it, which I did yesterday with a weak solution of Peters, I move it over into the window when the sun is coming in.
Help!! Jeanette
Might it have gotten too cold, Jeanette? Seems like I've heard that versi doesn't like to be cold.
Thanks Shierry, you might be right. It is still pretty cold outside here and I put it on a small table in front of that window where the sun is. It might not like that. Wonder if new ones will grow in place of those. Will be interesting to see. I hope the bigger ones don't do that.
Jeanette
I don't think they like to be moved when they start setting buds. ( SWAG on my part since I'm so new I still have similac on my breath)
Anyway, Renee gave me Lamour that was budded up last weekend so I could get my first face-to-face with a brug bloom. Lamour must've been pretty insulted from the transport down from WI - repotted then placed in a southfacing picture window. Most of the buds have fallen off but there's one original thats turgid and growing and there's a couple of new ones started. Hoping she'll regroup after the shock.

Only thing better than getting a L'Amour is to get one that is ready to bloom! Enjoy! Yes, moving them can cause them to drop buds, I think it is the change in light that does it. Temperatures too, winter is winter! I would think it would like being in front of the window Jeanette. Good luck!!
Gosh, 8ft, those look wonderful - were they started from seeds, and, if so, when???
These are all cuttings, some I ordered the end of Nov and a couple I got from Renee in Jan. Got a couple more the same size and a few smaller still in the basement. I did get some seeds from Brugie and Renee and the first one that sprouted in Dec is about 10" and starting to really take off.
I was just brug-bitten last Nov so I'm "trying" to ease into it. :)
They all look very happy 8ftbed!! Brugs are so much fun aren't they?
Looking good Blaine.
I was looking forward to spring but guess what! yep it is snowing, and they say we will get about 3 to 6 inches grrrrrr
My word, you have a green thumb, your cuttings look wonderful!!! Ooooops, I just saw your zone, the magical 5a....lucky, lol!!!
Sherry, too funny! It isn't all that easy in 5a. I'd much rather be in your zone. Less winter would be okay with me.
Shoot, Brugie, look at all the super gardens in 5a, including, ta ta - - - - MONIKA'S!!!!
Then there is the incredible zone CA, the number doesn't matter, ya know!!! I do not blame my zone or anyone but myself for my slow take off, but it appears that zone 5a and zone CA have a definite edge...the only thing I like better about my zone, than zone 5a is that (hopefully) my brugs can winter outside, the only thing I like better about my zone than zone CA is my space...
magical 5A - I think we've got the old "...greener on the other side" thing going on. I would so love to move back down south. Leave cannas in ground year round!!
Two things I "Don't" miss are the fireants and molecrickets!
Sherry - you realize I haven't even got to start cleaning up outside yet, much less doing any digging. There were only a few piles of snow left from the 1/22 session then this morning everything is covered again. I haven't even sprayed or pruned fruit trees yet.
I know! They've got 'Trading Spaces' and 'Trading Wives' on t.v.... we should do a 'Trading gardens' where a north and south gardener will swap locations from Nov - Jun.
8ftbed, that is just what I was thinking today after checking some of the threads from the Cal. gals!
Maybe we could work out some trade for even 2 weeks. We just need to find a Zone 10 that loves the snow. Skiing. snowmobiling, ice fishing. Ice skating, cross country sking. Hey, We have a cottage on a lake that we would love to trade for a warm place with a garden! Am I dreaming? Ha!!
Bonnie
8ft, fireants disappeared last year, did not have a single hill - of course that doesn't mean they won't be back. Where in the south were you located - I've never heard of a molecricket or do you mean moles and crickets??
I love skiing too Bonnie, probably my favorite sport!! My hubby and I were just talking about an early spring ski trip. Then I broke my ankle...
For the real nasties.... I lived in Corpus Christi TX, Charleston SC and Mayport FL.
There really is an animal called a molecricket (although it may actually be hyphenated). One of the ugliest faces you'd want to meet and can turn a golfcourse type lawn into baredirt in the blink of an eye. They eat all the roots off. All of a sudden you have growing yellow brown patches and if you sneeze hard the dead grass just blows away.
Of course they have those "Flying Teeth" down there as well. Also called 'No Seeums' in Cuba - stupid gnats with an itch in their bite that puts mosquitoes and chiggers to shame. I came this close || to dying in Corpus one fine morning at 04:30. Crawled out of the back of my truck; picked the t-shirt I had washed the night before up off the ground. Turned it right-side-out and pulled it on in the dark. It was full of fireants and although I managed to keep from falling on the ground, I was in and out of consciousness and lost all control of, uhmmm, bodily functions. About 11 I was finally able get in the cab, motor over to the end of the pier and at least clean up. 2 hours later I was able to drive up to the hospital. That was a close one...
Whew, no molecrickets for me, it sounds awful. I think 'no seeums' might be called chiggers here - not here in the Delta, but in the nearby hills, we don't have ticks either and I haven't seen a flea in years. Good golly, that fireant story is a doozy, I'm so glad you received treatment. I have never been bitten and hope it never happens!!! With all the brilliant people in the world, you would think someone would have come up with something to rid the planet of mosquitoes, huh??
