This is the trunk of one of the Brugs I purchased last year.
What's with this Brug???
I'll bet it is from too much water. Otherwise, I would have no idea. Sure doesn't resemble any kind of bug damage or SB. Leaves look great. I'll bet you aren't far from blooms.
I hope you're right, Shirley. I NEED some blooms. LOL
Ada, my county extension agent says irregular watering can cause lots of stuff, and I suppose too much rain sorta fits in there. I wish I could have those leaves and you could have my branches, which are good. Shoot, it's always something...
Could they have gotten a wee bit too cold outside ?
On 3rd. pic the bark looks split in some places and could be from going from cold to the sun hitting it .
That happens to regular trees and is the reason we wrap young trees. It's called sun scald around here
Some of the other marks in 1st & 2nd pic looks like injuries.
Hope you get your blooms soon !
I was going to say injuries also. I have some that got rubbed and they look just like that.
My Golden lady gets splits all the time over winter.
No black is good I would think. I have never seen SB in real life, thank God, so I am nort sure all the forms it takes.
Brugie, need some tutoring here. I don't see any "Y", so how can you tell from the leaves that this brug is going to bloom soon? What am I missing?
Jeanette
Ok Ada, I thought those were two separate trunks coming out of the soil.
Like I have some I grew from logs and they sprouted more than one plant on the log. How could Brugie know that from looking at the pictures you have? Well, in looking at them again, I guess from the direction each are coming from.
These things slip past a newbie.
Jeanette.
I have no idea why Shirley thought it may flower, Jeanette. But you can also look for subequal leaves at the base by the stem. If one side of the leaf is shorter than the other it means it is ready to flower! I am not sure that is a subequal leaf on the first crown pic, I think it may be half the leaf is just folded up. I do not see any on the second pic.
Sometimes there is no Y when it flowers, if you got a cutting of half of the Y that you rooted.
Look for these leaves
Well darn it Kell, don't you see something different every day!!! I have never seen a leaf like that. At least I never noticed it. Guess I am going to have to start opening my eyes wider.
My eyes are crossing. I keep flipping back and forth between what you are saying and the pictures. You say at the base by the stem. Do you mean at the bottom of all of the leaves that are left on the plant?
I think I see the one you are talking about. I'll bet that is the one she meant.
My clock is striking midnight. going to bed. Will take this up tomorrow. LOL Jeanette
How about just thinking about the size and shape of the plant.....I guess I've just grown them long enough that I see things that trigger my thoughts not thinking that people new to growing them won't see it. Sorry about that.
Brugie, Kell, that is so funny. I know what you are saying Brugie, but you know what? When I went in to go to bed I looked at my plant that has buds (my very first) and there are 4 of those leaves on there.
Kell, I think I have seen those leaves and thought they were deformed. Now I am going to have to look at all of my plants to see if they have those leaves.
But, Brugie, I have at least a couple of plants that have the look you are talking about. I may not have grown Brugs before but I have been gardening for 40+ years and have some of that instinct .
Thanks you 2. Very interesting, Jeanette
Ada, it looks to me like a fungus infection, some pink brugs are prone to.
Monika, I have it isolated from the other Brugs. I hope it isn't anything bad. I just bought it last summer.
It is not SB Ada but you have to watch it. If it is what I think it is, it will continue to affect the branches on this plant as soon as they mature.
I'm new, what's SB?
Thanks, Monika. I keep a close watch on it.
Thanks, I'm gently learning.
So Ada, what a shame if it is. So which brug is it? A nosey person wants to know. LOL
Kell, you have mail.
Kell, who is Nicholas? Pretty nice looking. Oh, and the cat too. LOL, Jeanette
Lookit that face ....... looks like he's in kitty heaven , can almost hear him purring.
Who's 'da dude ?
LOL I thought that was what you meant but couldn't resist. Very nice looking young man. The cat too. LOL Jeanette
Kell gorgeous young man.....he must be breaking quite a few hearts at school. Was he studying law? back East somewhere? or do I have him confused with someone else's son?
The first thing that I watch for . . even before the subequal leaves is how the nodes get closer and closer. If you notice at the bottom they are much further apart than at the top. As the nodes get close, then soon there will be subequal leaves and then a tiny bud. For those that have gardened many years, they recognize the pattern the plant takes on . . maybe even without realizing that it is the nodes that have gotten closer to each other. If someone finds this is not true that the nodes get closer .........I would like to know this has always happened with my brugs and I am always open to information.
LOL Jeanette!!! Thanks!!! And thanks Pebble. I am shameless in my devotion to this kid. And yes Pebble, you have such a good memory. He is in law school at Columbia. He loves it, doing just great. I hate that he is so far away.
You are right Frannie. As long as the nodes are far apart, the plant will continue to grow instead of flowering.
Two years ago, I had posted a sequence of pictures about this on another forum.
So Monika, can you pull it up and post it over here? I think that would be very interesting. Jeanette
Jeanette, it is a great thread, I had the site and lost it in a crash. Monika has any number of super threads, I surely wish someone that might have them would post them here. Especially the ones about start up in the spring. TIA!!!!
