CLOSED: Have ONE rooted Red Twig Dogwood for SASBE or ???

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

Winter clean up produced a very large (24 inches?) "V" shaped trimming that has a 2 -3 inch set of roots at the juncture of the two legs of the "v"... It has 1/2 to 3/4 leaves coming on all over it.

I usually do seed trades. Someone would have to explain to me how to ship this speciman. LMK

San Jose, CA

We're almost neighbors. I didn't know that dogwoods grew well here in Zone 9. I have always loved seeing them in Yosemite and other places where they get more cold in the winter. This renews my hope of someday growing a dogwood!

You want this rooted cutting?

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

How did you root the dogwood bush? I have this and would like to do some cuttings and root them as well. Thanks,
JanetS

It self-rooted. Looks like a joint/node (?) was in contact with the soil and just rooted. It was a very low branch. Will take picture and post. This was taken atop the hot tub lid and the white thing underneath is a paper towel. Good sized specimen.

If I were to attempt doing this myself, I'd use several garden staples to hold a joint/node against the soil, and maybe add a little mound of soil on top. Or if no low branches, maybe put a pot of soil next to the bush and proceed as above.

Has anyone claimed this? If not, I want it!

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

Not yet. It is yours, then. I am doing DG email for details...

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

I can do trade or SASBE. What do you have? I have done ZERO plant trades so I hope you can coach me on shipping it. It looks VERY tough. I have it in a large vase of water outside in bright light, but no direct sun, which is where it was until yesterday when it got chomped off.

I like orange, hanging baskets, bright flowers, containers, veggies in containers, fragrant stuff, and VINES! So tempt me! Or SASBE or however I should ship it. USPS has Priority Mail boxes for $7.00 anywhere in 2 days. It would fit nicely in a long skinny box, like one might ship posters in.

I am in the DG address book. I also have a BIG seed list so you might be able to see what I already have and like. I can DG email it if you want me to.

I am in the address book too, do you mean the exchange? I have lots of roses, want to trade some cuttings? I may even have a couple of them small enough to mail...

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

I have a small yard and two decks. You got anything mini in roses? Not sure I could root a rose. I do lots of container gardening. Do not like PINK!

How should I ship the red twig dogwoood to you?

San Jose, CA

I'm glad someone claimed it. I'd like to get one eventually, but my yard is in a state of flux right now and I don't know where half of the existing plants will end up.

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

How about we just do it for SASE?

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

I have lots of bubble wrap and can construct a custom envelope. I weighed the cutting and some envelope like stuff plus a damp paper towel for the roots... i figger I need 4 oz. worth of postage. Just send me stamps or paper $ to cover postage. Do you know 4 oz. postage First Class Hand Stamped?

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

I am not sure...Kim, would know, she knows everything about postage! Right Kim? Help, please...or someone, it doesn't have to be Kim...
Wait a minute! Doesn't a $3.85 stamp cover things up to a pound?

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

I doubt Kim is reading a closed thread...

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

Okay, I will, email her and ask her to read a closed thread..I read them all the time, just nosey I guess..

Kim says that if we send the tree first class it would cost less than $2.00 and priority would be $3.85.
I have been doing a lot of trades, and we usually go the priority route. Let me send you a stamp...

OK, so send me $3.85 worth of postage and I'll get busy having DW (very handy lady AND clever...) help me make a custom bubble envelope for it. As I think I mention before, I'll send it Monday.

Okay, I will put it in the mail tomorrow.

DW found a 3 or 4 inch heavy cardboard tube to ship the Red Twig in! It will be perfect. I do like my lil projects!

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

OOOOPS ---

For 3.85 I HAVE to use the USPA priotity ENVELOPE.

Will do it tomorrow.

Learn somethng new every day! Eh????

Thanks for the info on rooting....I will have to try this method. I understand it works with camellia, and hydrangea as well. So I will keep my fingers crossed!

Melva ---

...just found out from another trade that I can send a priority box for $3.85 if less than a pound I think.

So I packed it up in a box, roots in wet paper towel and wraped in foil...

Then gently put into box & covered with styro balls.

Off to PO now.
