cat owners - please help!

Our new kitty, Esmerelda, is having issues with her litterbox. For the third day she has pooped outside of the box (and it is puddles). She has only been here a week, is this just adjusting? Is there anything I can do to help make it go smoother? Hubby is getting irritated. :(
