Thank you all! Is there anything I should know about growing them from seed? I'm planning to direct sow them under my apple tree and maple tree.
Thank you again for your generosity!
Hi.I might have some astilbe seeds that I can send you..I will take a look:O)
Let me add my plea to JB's for information on starting hostas from seed!
I just got a generous packet of H. 'Piecrust Power' but no idea what they look like or how to start the seeds. If you want some, please email & LMK. Instead of a trade, postage is fine, or you could send TexasJewel some seeds for her Seeds4Seniors project! (Check her thread for more info, and please put culture information on the packet or on a note that she can include.)
I winter sowed the hosta seed I received last year and was quite pleased with the results. (My first winter sowing attempt.) http://www.wintersown.org/wseo1/index.html
JB, do you want those 'Piecrust Power' seeds? PLMK.
I'll try wintersowing some & see what happens -- thanks, kooger!
BTW, I got some email from an expert hosta growing saying we shouldn't expect our hosta seeds to come true to type. Some may be lovely, others may not look like much, but probably none of them will look like the parent. So it'll be an adventure, like those daylily crosses I'm sprouting now!
For hosta seed starting, go to the Hosta Forum. There is information available in some of the threads there.
I have white cosmos, 2 different kinds of basil (both purple) and 2-3 different kinds of marigolds. The white cosmos was a fluke from last year. I thought what I sowed was a mix (and didn't see any white when I was collecting seeds). I didn't expect to see the white, but it was a delight. This seed was collected only from the white bloomers. Here's a photo of one. Cute! Send me your addy and I'll get these out for you. No trade necessary.
