Hi everybody--
I am interested in MSJen's thread pics of her Heirloom Daffodils http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/485108/ , and wondered if anyone else has historic Daffodils in their garden? If so, as they bloom this spring, would you consider posting a pic, puhleez!?
And BTW Old House Gardens, mentioned as great source for heirlooms (with lots of good pictures), is having a preseason sale online until January 31...
and I found these Daffodils listed under VanEngelen's ---some I have in our garden and I didn't realize they were 'heirloom'
(not for sale right now, but interesting to know about)...
http://www.vanengelen.com/catview.cgi?_fn=Item&_recordnum=6135&_category=Special%20Collections
Also, I am excited about this idea---do you think there is enough interest to get up a Co-op for Heirlooms?
So, if you find out you have some Heirloom Daffs in your garden this spring, please post a picture for us.
thanks. t.
You search for beauty near & far
While winter holds you with its chills,
But soon spring's gates will stand ajar,
And in will march the Daffodils!"

Heirloom Daffodils? Any pics from your garden?
Bear with me while I share a little more research on Narcissus Heirlooms--
VanEngelen listed these Narcissus/Daffodils in their Heirloom group, so, if you are growing any of these...yours qualifies for a 'photo opportunity' on this thread! So please don't deny us!
Of course, there are many, many more out there, and so many have good personal stories--don't you love Jen's--making daffodil chain necklaces from her tiny heirloom daffodils when she was a little girl?
Looking forward to your pics/posts. t. :-)

Tabasco,
Going to check out the other site now..i've scoured over OHG over and over again, lol.
When i look back now, i'm surpised mom didnt hit the roof when we came inside with those necklaces. It did bring back the memories of the field next door that just had an abundance of them. I've since noticed that they just arent there anymore...which makes me realize that i need to preserve these as much as i can.
I have snowdrops blooming also that i'll post a pic of tomorrow. They were here when we moved her also. Also have parrot glads and a few other unknowns.
I love cheerfulness!!
If you use 1940 as a cut-off date for 'Heirloom', here are a bunch of more old hybrids:
Large-cupped Binkie 1938
Large-cupped Brunswick 1931
Large-cupped Carlton 1927
Large-cupped Crocus 1927
Large-cupped Dunlewey 1934
Large-cupped Penvose 1937
Large-cupped Polindra 1927
Trumpet Beersheba 1923
Trumpet Emperor 1865
Jonquilla Sweetness 1939
Cyclamineus March Sunshine 1923
Must admit I've never seen these ones locally for sale.
We have these in our garden:
King Alfred
Cheerfulness
Narcissus Hawera
Narcissus February Gold
Narcissus Avalanche
Jonquilla sweetness
Fortune
Silver Chimes Narcissus
Binkie
Brunswick
Grand Monarque
Todd--thanks for posting--love your 'y. cheerfulness'--I am growing that one too, but it's not showing yet. 'Fortune' is nice, but y. cheerfulness is just so, well, 'cheery'!
Found your additions interesting--Carlton and Sweetness are both mentioned in our catalogs a lot (and I planted a few this year from HD), although I don't know anything more about them...are the other ones from UK sources perhaps? I'll have to look them up. (Have you been adding heirloom narcissus to the P.Files BTW)?
I found this essay written by a past president of the American Daffodil Society (who lives here in Cincinnati) that talks about various historic/heirloom narcissi. http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/daffodils_garden_and_show/75733 I'll add it here for the record. Good for background if one wants to get going on these! Which I do ;-) !
p.s. and this one, too. http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/daffodils/88132 for the really serious.
Have a good week. t.

Chelsea,
How long have you been collecting heirlooms daffs? Thats quite a collection
Hi!I've gotten most of them from my Nonna, who brought them over with her from Germany. Her mother loved daffodils, and she brought over most of them. Now they have spread to cover the whole yard!Grande-Nonna collected a lot of named daffodils, and passed them on to her. Now,they've been passed on to me,and I love them to death:)
I heirlooms I mentioned are primarily from the UK. Unfortunately, I have narcissus fly in my garden so daffodils are only annuals....too bad as they are among my favorite spring bulbs. There are few heirlooms surviving outside of my city where narcissus fly is not a problem.
i'm not sure what narcissus fly is??
tabasco..........Have you ever seen this website....
http://www.oldhousegardens.com/why.asp
Scott Kunst is wonderful....We had him speak to us at our Master Gardeners Assoc. meeting. His website is full of all sorts of information about heirloom bulbs....
Deann
Narcissus fly looks like a small house-fly. They lay eggs at the base of the leaves just after the narcissus flowers fade. The maggots then eat out the bulb. Our infestation came from infected bulbs out of Holland which were delivered to a local nursery. They found the bulbs to be infected and threw them in the compost pile rather than burning them. The result is that St. John's is full of the fly which has no natural predators here. In St. John's, narcissus are now grown as annuals....outside the city, they are OK. The fly also attacks Leucojum and Galanthus, but so far, my Galanthus are OK.
Oh what a shame. Is there a way for you to dig the bulbs before the flies get to them?
Thanks deann for posting the link to Old House Gardens--yes, I believe Scott's link is posted on the Bulb/flower thread on the Heirloom forum and also on Jen's thread on the Bulbs forum which are both sort of companions to this thread...(a little disorganized but this thread was meant mainly for picture records and lists of Heirloom Daffs that DGers are growing)...and there are so many more historics and heirlooms to discover and discuss ... Well, the whole topic fascinates me and there is lots of good info out there, so keep posting your pics and records here....
Have a good week. Hope we get some Daffs to show--I'm feeling lucky today. t.
Hi, Gumilla--do you have an ID for your daffodil? It's looks to be a very pretty classic but it would be interesting to know if you have similar named varieties as ours in Pakistan...
I just came across this email from Debbie Van Bourgondien about 'Bulbs with a Past' http://www.dutchbulbs.com/nbulblady.html
that gives some interesting history on the various bulbs we find in our gardens that may be of interest. (If you think you may order from V. B., though, it may be best to check Watchdog for their history also.)
brandnewgirl--I am wondering how your daffodils are coming along...you should have a pretty show by now. Any pics of your heirlooms?
Anybody else have some 'heirloom' daffs blooming? Would love to see some pics.
Thanks. ;-) t.
I think all my heirlooms are early bloomers....really early bloomers. I havent seen a flower since campernelle bloomed a few weeks ago.
Here is the heirloom 'Mount Hood' from our garden...
According to Thomas Etty, heirloom seedsman, it is a 1938 1W-W. introduced by P van Deursen.
A very sturdy looking ivory trumpet narcissus that some say is a nice perennializer. This is at least the second year in our garden.
By the way, Mr. Etty has an interesting catalog of old bulb varieties at this link..
http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~nfarley/thomas-etty/etty.html
As soon as it stops raining I will have more heirloom daffs to post... ;-) t.
I cant wait to see them. All of mine seem to be real early bloomers and i havent had any bloom since campernelle.
Keep them coming, please!!
