Charlie, I wondered if you were getting your mushroom compost from Monterey Mushroom. I have a friend who lives in Huntsville, always gets his from there. I don't think I could haul much in my little Hyundai, and I can't really afford delivery. But I think Texans Agri Products on 105 just east of Conroe carries it in the bag. At least I can haul that, and I can get just what I'm able to handle at the time.

Do you need to let the mushroom compost "rest" before planting in it, or can you go ahead and spread it on top of already planted beds? I'll bet it makes great compost tea, also!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

you need to let it rest and even then it can be too "hot" for certain plants. I, too, buy from Monterrey Mushroom. Walmart carries bags of it fof $1.98. I've used that and that one I don't need to let rest. I figure it's been resting a while by the time it gets packaged.

Regarding planting in it; To hot or to strong for new plants!
We mix a little of last years with our potting soil.
(seems to work ok)

On established plants we use it right away.
Haha, like yesterday tha stuff was wet when we got it. You have to work it some or its lumps.

Mushrooms are heavy nitrogen eaters so its not to hot in that respect for most plants. Applied directly.
[vossner] is correct!

Compost tea, you betya!
I have a 50-60 gal plastic container I use. We take a tow sack, berlap bag? half filled with compost and suspend it in tha water.
They say you should let it set for at least 3 days before using.
I try and keep some all year!

15 years ago when I was a young man of 55 I done something only twice, two years. I had limited space for a garden; tha pic will explain.
I built the containers 25'x4' some were 30 by 4, once again see pic.

I layered the bottom with several sheets of newspaper, no color.
Filled the boxs with a mixture of compost and garden dirt. lol jus mixed it on tha spot. ??? on the exact mix.
I transplanted directly into them.

Almost weed free through out. Left enough room between containers to mow. It was beautiful! After a couple of years I found the property we have now and said, No more, to old!

15 years later, that holds true, for me!
But, its a great idea for limited space, & a strong back.
[Thanks for lettting me share]

another thing I just thought if, I attended a lecture where they mentioned that while any compost is better than no compost at all, a "minus" on mushroom compost was that it has a high degree of salt and if your soil is salty, well naturally, you shouldn't aggravate the condition by adding mushroom compost. When asked what to do, he said to let the pile "rest" for a while so the rain would leach the salt. I've had my soil analyzed and know salt content is low, but I still let it sit in an out of the way corner of my property for a while for reasons given above. I don't know if this is an acceptable amount of time, but on average my pile sits about 2-3 months before I use. By that time the smell has also dissipated, peeuh!!!!

San Jacinto County, TX(Zone 8a)

Before they changed it a few years ago we had to drive through the place where its all worked and mixed.
'peeuh!!!!' especially after a rain might be understated.

Slicker than, lol might be an understatement also.

Here it is almost a year later & I'm mushroom hungry!
If any one should be in this area [member page] has location of our produce stand, stop by.
I have two very rested piles of compost. Small one near a year old, other is several months.
(not in the compost selling business)
Donate 50 cents per heaping 5 gal bucket lol or not.... DG'ers only!

Starting In the next couple of weeks I'll have lots of fresh because I'll use 20-30 thousand pounds. My soil is sand and mostly sloped. Leaks away.

Charlie, we're sure glad you guys made it through Rita! I know there are many of those who were "parked" on hwy 59 headed out of town who remember you for your kindness in providing water, a place to stop & cool off, and to re-charge the electronics!

I'll have to make a trip out to visit you sometime soon. You aren't too far away, just gas is so high...

San Jacinto County, TX(Zone 8a)

Gas is high!
During the aftermath of Rita many stations were closed for lack of power or simply ran out.
We found the 'Flying J north of New Caney open. There were long lines for a while but they had gas and diesel.

You are welcome anytime maggiemoo

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks Charlie!
