Scent-Sational GH

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

I think this is the GH (here in Victoria) that Sandy was mentioning that was advertised in the gardening mag. I can't find the thread it was in. It is about 4-500' from the corner of Sayward and the HWY for those of you that know where it is. It's closed M-T-W, and open 10-5 the rest of the week. It was closed today when we went to have a look, and my first opinion is that I shouldn't judge a book by it's cover so will withhold judgement until I get inside the place. It certainly doesn't have any curb appeal at all.

I hope you didn't have to go out of your way to find it Linda.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Is this the one? As Sandy had mentioned in the RU trade thread, there's an e-mail address, but I couldn't find a web site. They are listed in lots of regional nursery/garden centre sites tho', so that's a good sign.

In restaurants, sometimes the places with no curb appeal have the best food :-) You'd think that with a nursery though, curb appeal would be part of the job. Well as you say Linda, it's good not to necessarily judge a book by its cover. I'll look forward to finding out more about this business, if we get the opportunity.

That is the place Shannon

I'll go and check it out on the w/e. I'm interested to see what's it like, besides, it's sort of on the way to the home & garden show. Saturday Thomas Hobbs is a guest speaker.

Wow

Let me be the first to remindus (me) NOT to judge a place by the curb appeal.

I think this little place should be on our list of places to visit. It's a 2 person business and both have other 'paying' jobs, so are only Thursday to Sunday. They have many different kinds of plants, from perennials, tropical, local, some rare, and some old and some new. Pauline, one of the owners gave me a tour of the GH's. She knew most of them, way more, like 90% more than I knew. From what I know, she has most of everything, but says they only about 10 of each plant. I think they've been in biz only a couple -few years so are still small.

I got out of the truck and was welcomed by the neighbours german shepard, happy to see me and was well behaved. Then the owners Golden retriever came out as well to greet, then I saw a person comeing. The dogs were great and friendly and didn't jump up so I was pleased.

I mentioned to Pauline that I was part of a gardening group from across Canada, that would be meeting here the first w/e of April. She'd be happy to have us come around, and she'd give us a tour. If we are unable to make it during the w/e, let her know and she'll arrange a time for us to be there on Monday, when they are closed. How's that for service!

Ginny (inanda) she has some pardacanda lilies and some ?brandacanda lilies. If anyone would like to email her to ask what she might have, and if you know what you want, she says let her know now so she can take cuttings now for you. If/when you email her, mention my name and that you are part of the canadian gardening group meeting the first w/e of April.

The email on the business card she gave me is scentsation@pacificcoast.net

She gave me a freebie of Corsican mint, and I've asked for a cutting to be made from one of her plants already.

Summary: I'm impressed.

Sounds fantastic, Linda. If we can fit it into..ahem..our busy schedule... then I think we should go. Sounds like a great place to see.

Elaine, thanks for the link.

I only asked about the price of one thing, a red sanguinea brug, that was in a pot about 3 gal, and the plant was about 3' high, it didn't have a price on it, no plant did, but she said $20. I almost fell over, but tried to buy it on the spot. She wasn't sure if it was one of the 'stock' plants that they take cuttings from, but it wasn't in the roped off area of their stock plants, in a whole other GH. So Imma hoping to get my hands on it some day!

Thanks Elaine. I spotted some stuff I'd sure like to have too. Sigh... I have decided I am going to drive to Kelowna on the 1st and park at the airport, rather than taking the bus. Just too much hassle. Looks like I'll be bringing more plants to the RU and definitely bringing more home now too.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Thanks Linda. Does sound too yummy to miss.
