clivia non-bloomer

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

It has fine foliage, but never a flower. Main plant died back, and a new one came in adjacent to the original. In the house now, in morning sunny window. Feed it? What? I am careful not to overwater.

I am having the same problem with my clivia. It has never bloomed and it is a huge plant, pot bound with roots at the surface. I keep it in a cool room (down to 40's at times) under shop lights in the winter and put it outside in the summer under the shade of a maple tree. I have a smaller yellow one that has yet to bloom, also.

Hope someone can share some information on getting these lovely plants to bloom.

Me too.

Did we discuss a trade a while back? I checked. You are sending me a SASBE for j maple tree seeds.

Steve,
Yes, I sent the mailer out on Saturday for the maple seeds. It should reach you by the end of the week.

OK. I have GOBS of seed. In my J maple seed posting I included a picture of a pile of them.

I saw the pile of seeds. Are there any tricks to getting them to germinate? Should I chill or soak them before planting?

Shirley --

They are sprouting the the cracks in the stairs to the deck. It's in the high 40s here at nite and mid to high 60s during the day. They might not like frost. They drop from the trees and we have volunteers EVERYWHERE. We dig up volunteers and put into 6 paks and then 3 inch or so pots. Easy schmeezy. You'll get a hundred or so, so experiment and share widely. Do not need heat I imagine, but up to 70 would be ok. Get bright indirect light where they are sprouting now.

Steve,
Thank you for the information. I will try different ways of germinating them. I know some other people who would love to try growing them, too. Will be glad to share with them.

I bought one last year from Lowes. They offered them as potted plants for Mothers Day,but instead of buying one for my mother I bought one for myself. They were in full bloom and it was the first time I have seen them offered anyplace other than a nursery.

I overwintered mine in my gh sitting on the floor in the back corner where it gets late afternoon sun. I have not given it any special attention at all except for keeping it evenly moist and potbound in a one gallon pot.

I noticed earlier this week it has made one new little plant and has not one but two bloomscapes coming out. Boy was I surprised cause I wasn't sure if i'd ever see it bloom again.

I have a yellow two year old Clivia division growing in a pot. It's probably too young to bloom so I haven't given much thought to blooming difficulties. I did have the orange flowered variety growing in the ground in the San Jose eastern foothills. It was planted on the north side of the house and bloomed every year. Since I can't grow Clivias in the ground where I live now, I've been looking for pot culture information on Clivias. I found the enclosed link. It has information on getting Clivias to bloom. Hope it helps.
