Fertilizer

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

I have been following a thread on the Brug and Friends forum concerning fertilizer, in particular, for Brugs. They recommend a fertizer with a low middle number. There is a product from Scotts in the states that is called Cal-Mag 15-5-15 fertizer that is supposedly great. I went to my Home Hardward yesterday and could find nothing like it in the Fertizer/Plant section. Does anyone know of a source for this stuff?
BTW, has anyone been following the threads on the new forum "Garden Art"? It's great and just up my alley, as I love all kinds of garden ornaments and things. There are some great ideas to be had there.

Donna, we have used a product called RainGrow for two seasons now. It is organic, and is 4-2-3. It is a great product. The nursery close to us uses it on all it's plants, and Butchart Gardens uses it. Last year, we had over 70 buds on one of our rose bushes. Check out:

We started out buying it at the nursery, but then bought it in bulk through them as it was much cheaper.

I've been following the garden art forum and the mock rocks.

I use 20-20-20 mostly, seems to do me fine.

Thanks Glenda, These are close neighbors of mine, I may have to put in an order. Great link!

That's really interesting Donna. Thanks for bringing it up as I hadn't read that thread. I'll have to look for some of the RainGrow fertilizer around here.

The RainGrow site has a store locator on their home page. I know it is available at nurseries here, also Home Hardware and I think Canadian Tire. Shouldn't be hard to find. It really is a good product and we are very pleased with it so far. I use it on my houseplants too.

Wow, you're right Glenda, there are 11 places in town that sell it. By doing that search I even discovered a plant place in town that I've never heard of...Ladybug Greenhouse.

Thanks, Sandy

the greenhouse uses plant cote which is 14 14 14 i believe and releases over four months

Raingrow isn't the best for brugs. I've used it before. I'd stick with Miracle Grow either 20-20-20 or Miracle Grow for roses. Those numbers for fertilizer come from Monika's book and there isn't a fertilizer in Canada that either Liz or myself could ever find that matched those numbers. Just remember, brugs are heavy feeders, feed them frequently in the summer.

Thanks Jeanne, I appreciate the info.

I use 20-20-20 or 19-19-19 whatever local feed stor has in stock. 20kilo bag for around $12. Farmers buy it by the truckful. One bag has lasted me for 3.5 years so far and still have over half left.

After hearing what Jeanne had to say, I went out and bought a bucket of 20-20-20. When I read the directions for use, I knew that it will last me an awfully long time as well.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Donna where did you find a bucket with that combination?

You can get buckets of that at Canadian Tire Donna.

I've got lots of Shultz fertilizer I need to use up. It's 10-15-10. I don't suppose it would hurt to alternate that with 20-20-20 would it?

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

I got it at Canadian Tire, the maufacturer was PlantProd. Also saw it today again at Mitchell's Home Supplies.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Thanks, I'll have to look next time I'm in Canadian Tire.

Should add to this thread. I use 20-20-20 or whatever - in spring and after freezeup. Rest of the year I use manure/alfalfa tea - with vinegar added for acid loving things and extra things for roses.

Donna, a company called
Terra Link in BC 604-864-9044 carries Cal-Mag 15-5-15. I hope that helps

It does, Anna, thanks so much. I'll give them a call and see if they have a distributor in the Southern Interior. :D

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Woo, Hoo! They do have a Division sales office in Oliver, B.C. and I'll be driving right through there at the end of the month. I will pick up a bag then. A Peters Brand 25 lb bag costs $31.75, but I would imagine it will last forever. Thanks again Anna.
