I received lovely seeds today from Cape May New Jersey. Forgive me, but I must be getting old! Can't remember who you are or what I have obviously asked you to send me. I want to return postage if needed! If it's you, please email me.

She's very kind and generous.

Ruby42 is also from Cape May NJ.
Thank you Nature Walker and rose318! I'll get on it.
Thanks for the info rose318, I never traded with her. And don't even know her.
~* Robin
OOps, I meant the other two...see what I mean about the mind adrift?! That would be 76summerwind and Ruby42 who I will send mail to...and did.
No replies yet from 76summerwind nor Ruby42. If they send seeds, they're not saying. So the seeds remain a mystery.
Then it was your 'Fairy God Mother' eg: Mother Nature!
.LOL!!

I believe NatureWalker you may be right!
Sorry to say that the seed's were NOT from me!!!
Have you found out who sent them to you?
sue
Not a peep! Mystery seeds. Sure hope they're "legal"!!
LOL!!!!
Anybody know what this is? When the seeds arrived back in February they were wrapped in damp paper towels. I popped 'em in the back of the fridge. Checked on 'em now and again, and when they looked like they were "peeking out" and about to sprout I popped 'em in this tray. Well, here they are...four of them...don't know who sent 'em, and don't know what they are. Please, if you recognize this plant let me know! I am totally dumbfounded.
if I didn't know better I would thik it was a rose......
Hmmm.
They Do appear to have what may turn into thorns on the stem, though at this stage these spikey protrusions are very soft and pliable.
The seeds were large, about the size of 4o'clock seeds and hard like those of the ginseng. I've never seen a rose seed. Would that size be consistent with the rose?
The leaf does remind me also of a rose, but the shape isn't "right" is it? Each leaf DOES NOT HAVE 3 lobes! Editing here to say that there are 3 separate leaves per stem. Still not 5 leaves per stem like the roses I'm familiar with.

then it's most likely not a rose --- rose seeds are tiny (if rose hip size gives any indication) I really have no clue at this point waht it is...
Heather
Roses will have only 3 leaves on immature stems, and 5 on mature ones, but they don't look like roses to me. Some kind of perennial? Perhaps it's too early to ID them. I'm going to keep up with this thread, what a mystery! How fun is this anyway?
Heck I'm tempted to send some incognito seed with no return addy to some of my prior trading buddies just for fun! You know, as gardners, we can't help ourselves! We just HAVE to plant them and find out what they are!
Karen :~D
Oh boy, isn't THAT the truth. I could have tossed 'em...but nooooooo. I love this mystery.
It's been fun so far. If they're not illegal, then I best also hope they're not poisonous! 3 leaves let it be?
First, I was happy to see them sprout. Now, I'm happy to see them get leaves. In a few days, I'll pot them up into their own individual pots and continue to baby them on form a safe spot on my east facing front porch.
I'l post updated photos here every couple of weeks or so.
When they have sufficient roots I'll plant one in shade, one in sun, and one is partial shade --unless someone here at Dave's figures out for me what the heck they are!
Cool! I'll play along! Thanks for posting your seed mystery. This is fun.
(I seriously need to get a life don't I?)
Karen
oh yeah-- that is a rose alright! can't wait to see it bloom!
Yup! Lookin' rosie! :~D
You suppose these are like multiflora rose? Gosh, I hope not. But isn't htis fun?!
Hey-- maybe that "seed" was the entire hip of a mini rose!
What do you mean? I'm totally unfamiliar with hips (other than my own gargantuan ones!) and unfamiliar with mini roses.

The seed pods of a rose is the rose hip. Mini roses are tiny they don't grow to be a huge srub but rater stay less than 2 feet tall or so. Bassetmom has tons!
Heather
The third and final plant has still not produced a bud.
So now the mystery continues....
If roses they are...are they shrubs? perhaps climbers? mini roses? How long until I will know? One season? Two? Three? And if I planted rose hips, why only one rose? Shouldn't a few have sprouted in one spot?
Is this fun, or what!?
I've planted both budded roses as of today (Friday) puting them where I think they will look good if I don't move them in the future (one I planted as a shrub--location wise) (one I planted as a climber or rambler if that's what it is) Certainly one will have to get moved for sure. I think I have a spot in mind for the third but haven't yet planted it. No matter what it turns into it will be able to stay put once placed.
This picture should give all of you watching this thread some idea of the size of the first red bloom...pinkie isn't any larger.
Darleen,
How lucky you are to sucessfully grow roses from seed.
Believe me I an no expert, but from what I've read about growing roses from seed, they don't always resemble the parent plant. It totally depends on what other rose in the area was the pollinator.
More than likely this was accomplished by "the birds & the bees" method and a rose from the next block could be the daddy.
It's a strong possibility is that your red and pink rose were from the same bush, each seed has it's own DNA (just like humans, the same mom and dad can produce one blonde child and one redhead).
At this point the size of the flower isn't really a accurate indication of the bloom size of the mature plant. Your baby roses 1st blooms are going to be much smaller than they will be next year and even the year after.
As it matures it may be possible to identify your rose, but I wouldn't count on it.
I would just enjoy your roses and name them yourself, as they are probably unique and the only way to duplicate them would be from cuttings.
Weeks roses has an interesting section on breeding roses.

Dovey
Dovey,
Thanks for the very informative slide show! Of course I added that site to my favorites, not that I would have the patience to do it. If you are interested in Hybridizing Roses, here is another site you will enjoy: http://www.rosehybridizers.org/index.html I esp thought the article about "Why would a grown man Spend So Much Time With Roses" was interesting. It is under the Article on Rose Hybridization section. ~ Suzi :)
Suzi,
I was astounded at the process and how long it takes. Sheesh!
I think just for fun, I'll collect some seeds this year and see what comes of it.
Thanks for the additional link, I'll check it out
Dove
Dovey,
The link you listed gave the process 8-10 yrs and is geared more to the professional hybridizer. The article about the man spending time w/ roses is more for home hybridizer... giving experience and describes the roses after yr or 2.
This is more along the route of my patience quotient. But I doubt have that much... ha ha!! It is all very interesting and if you decide to try it, I want to see your thread detailing all that you do. So, please try to remember to send me a link to any thread you start on here, just in case I miss it! Thanks, Suzi :)
Dovey and Briar, Thank you both for these links. Looks like fascinating reading which will undoubtedly lead to more reading. Obviously whoever sent the original seeds is keeping mum, so I guess I'll close this thread and move on over to the rose forum where I've posted this mystery. Hoping for lots of input and more fun on this topic over in that section of the garden.
Darleen,
They were leading you down the path to becoming a true rosarian! You've had a great adventure and I am sure there is more to come! See you in the rose forum! ~ Suzi :)
