hoop house

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

I'm putting up a hoop house so I can move my brugs outside. How warm does it have to be in there for them to survive ?

I wouldn't let it get much below 40 degrees at night and 50 during the days. With the increased day length, they are going to start growing now. Your temps shouldn't get much lower than that now, should they? I was talking to someone in SC last night and he said his daffs were in bloom. Oh to have that kind of weather.

Charlotte, if it's in the sun, it'll be very warn during the day when the sun is shining. You'll have to open it up during the day with the temperatures we're having now.. Mine will get into the high eighties if I don't open it and have the exhaust fans running but it'll cool down fast when the sun goes down. Because I have seedlings in mine, I never let it get under 55. It usually stays around 60 degrees. If I only have bigger Brugs inside, I keep it between 45- 55 degrees at night. Others may do differently but I start worrying if it gets below 45.

Thanks guys. I'll see what I can do.

Holey Moley, I got the pvc frame up. What a chore even for this small thing. Well the wind was blowing 20 MPH :)

I will open it during the day. Have to go out each morning to feed the livestock anyway. Want to keep it warm enough with some lights but can borrow a little heater from my Dad if I need to.

The house is about 6' x 8' by 6 1/2 ' high.

My husband is concerned that I cant keep it warm enough at night but with a couple lights and a small electric heater - surely I can do ok. The low temps are forecast to stay no lower than 41 for the next six days.

Brugie, the daffs are blooming here too. Up the road they used to have a daffodil festival every year, but it seemed like when ever it was planned, it would always freeze or even snow. Henceforth, it's called the 'daffodil and snow tire festival', lol, but it's true.

You are so lucky. If I keep talking I might just get myself convinced that it is time to move to a warmer climate.

Well, I admit that I like where I live, but it's not for everyone, the heat and humidity can be as bad as the cold, especially sense we all allow ourselves to be spoiled by air conditioning, which, IMO, only makes the heat worse, but you can bet I use it when it's too hot for comfort to sleep...where do you plan to move???

I'll start looking today if you want to live here. Just how big a place do you want?

Hahahahaha, Sidney, she will need lots of room for all her plants!!!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I was figuring, !,000sq ft house, 1,000 sq ft GH, and 2 acres garden, more than that requires wonderwoman or hired help, or a lot of Honey.

LOL!! We will stay here as long as Jim's mom is living. She will be 92 in July and is quite frail now. We have talked about southern Missouri or northern Arkansas. I know it isn't a lot better, but I love the lakes and have relatives that live near Branson, Mo. and a nephew that just bought a condo in Branson. I'm thinking Kimberling City, Mo. At our ages, we don't want to get to far from Family. Time will tell. Thanks for thinking of me and I love the idea of the small house, greenhouse and acreage. LOL!

Charlotte, I have a hoophouse! I overwinter lots of brugs in there. It keeps them fine even when it got down to just below 30 degrees. But mind you, here it only dips that low for a few hours at a time. I had lots of my leaves freeze and some limb damage on the brugs outside but no problem with the ones in the hoophouse.

Now my temps usually stay at night in the high 30s and low 40s in the winter, but they can occasionally dip down to the low 30s. I have no heat either in there. Just plastic. Do not let your plants touch the plastic though, what touches will freeze.

I also lay 2 cu ft bags of dirt all along the plastic around the outside edges for the wind here can get to 60 miles an hour and I did not want to see the hoophouse take off! LOL
GOOD LUCK!

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Yes, I dont want a flying hoop house and I was a little concerned about that :)
I left about 18 inches of plastic on the sides and put several inches on mulch around three sides.
I have 2 75 watt bulbs in there for night time. Its supposed to be about 32 this weekend so we will see how things go.

I f you are real worried, go out and throw a sheet over them also at night! I will keep good thoughts for you!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I'll keep good thoughts too.

I hope they do okay. I hope to trade for one that is two colors. You know one color inside and rimmed with another. I think that is so cool.
