I'm itching to start growing stuff, but I live in zone 5, so last frost is usually mid-May. I'm planning on doing several containers, and I want to know when I can start:
black-eyed suzie vines (do they grow super fast?), nasturtiums (I'm planning on planting them in containers inside and bringing them outside - I know they don't transplant well), and
I was wondering if you could use morning glory in a pot... will it hang over or will it try to climb the other plants?
Is it too early to start all of these in a week or 2? Will it shock the plants if I start them too early and then bring them outside when they are kind of big?
Any ideas/ experience?
Thank you!
Mara
when can I plant trailing things?
It's a tad too early in our zone 5 - wait a couple more weeks. If you plant them now (I understand! LOL), you will need to pinch out the growing tips to keep them compact and from tangling with one another. If you can wait FOUR more weeks, you can plant them and put them outdoors.
I thought so. I'll wait a little longer to start them - maybe I'll start one of each for now...
How about using morning glory or moon vine in a container with other plants? Will it drape over or will it crowd out the other plants?

It will do very well, if your container is 5 gallons or larger, and you provide something for it to climb on. You could consider using a multi-branched dead tree limb for your moonvine or morining glories to climb on. 5 gallons of soil is a lot of soil - I use them every year, in combo plantings, and everything does great.
The bigger the container, the bigger the plant. You should have a beautiful display. I would recommend mixing water crystals in with your soil for moisture retention, or you will be watering every other day.
We have a nursery here that lets them drape off of the container and flow along the sides and some of the ground. The look great! They also grow them in their hanging baskets, draping or growing fo the chains. Either way, they are really neat. Good luck and post some pics when they get going!
