WONDERFUL, Awanda! Once lacunosa starts blooming, it does not stop! I love walking in the greenhouse and an exotic smell drifts through the air. Then comes the fun of tracking down the source of the scent. Awesome, isn't it?

How wonderful Awanda - enjoy!! I am new to Dave's Garden and love hoyas! I have recently become a small hoya collector (16 species), and I am trying to find out more about them & specific care requirements. I was so happy to hear someone was having luck with their H. lacunosa as I am having problems with mine (rec'd in Sep/04 - looked just fine). The leaves now have started turning yellow and then fall off (about 20 or more for about a month now) and also the leaves have a blotchy reddness to many of them. I noticed on some, the stem also starts looking sort of yellow/dried out seeming and then the leaves start turning. I do have this particular hoya, as well as others, under a grow light (about 15" above), in a west sliding door window (never open/trees blocking most sun), on a heating grow mat (plants raised up about 2" on a metal grid), misting all daily and fan blowing slightly on them. I water when somewhat dry as I've read for this time of year. The funny thing is, I do see some new growth, and I think a little flower is developing (little buds at the end of a stem) - stress related I believe... but it is exciting to see!!

If you have any idea of what I could be doing wrong or changes to make, please let me know - it would be most appreciated... the fragrance and bloom on this hoya sounds awesome!

Hi Terri, welcome to Dave's and the addicting world of hoyas:-). I keep the soil moist at all times, never let it dry out. This is one hoya that doesn't like dry soil. I have mine hanging at the north end of my greenhouse and it doesn't really receive any direct sun. Try keeping the soil moist at all times and see if that helps.

Thank you Awanda! Yes, hoyas are addictive aren't they! ;-) I will certainly keep more moist. In thinking about your note of keeping your H. lacunosa in the north end of your greenhouse and looking so healthy has me asking, is mine perhaps getting too much light under the grow lights? Could the reddish leaf coloring be from too much light then or is just more of a symptom of too little water? I could move this plant (and maybe even the H. serpens & bella) one shelf down so they are not under the grow lights but receiving natural light from the west window - only rec'g just a short bit of late afternoon filtered sun. Good idea or not??

--Again, thank you...Terri

Terri I forgot to address the red leaves, it probably is receiving too much light. I have my serpens where it's shaded, doesn't ever really receive any light. I also have it planted in a coconut shell in spagh moss:-). Moving them both is a good idea.

Blessings,
Awanda

Awanda
Can you bottle that scent? I have zero luck with H. lacunosa. Mine is close to going to hoya heaven. One one litle stem and leaves hanging in there. I think I'm going to have to start over again. Wonder what I am doing wrong? What water level do you keep your lacunosa at? My climate is hot and humid, yours hot and dry?

Ah Awanda! I may have to print out the photo of your flowers and tape it to the window next to my lanunosa to give her a clue of what she's SUPPOSED to be doing! LOL :~)

NB54, I keep my lacunosa moist at all times, never let it dry out. As I mentioned to Terri, I have it at the north end of the greenhouse, so no direct sun. Our climate is hot/dry, but the humidity in the greenhouse is high, actually my hoyas don't know they live in Arizona:-).
KC, you might want to tell your lacunosa that my lacunosa pallidaflora is also getting ready to bloom, that should make it really jealous:-).

Blessings,
Awanda

I'll just bring her over to the computer and show her! LOL
