Scooterbug, I soak mine for about a week in tap water then plant in potting soil, I use Metro-Mix for starting seeds.I start mine on a windowsill. They take a long time to germinate.
I read somewhere not to nick banana seeds, just soak them.

Scooterbug I just planted 16 seeds this morning. My instructions were to soak for 24 to 48 hrs. in 1-5 h202 and water. Change the water about 2 to 3 times a day.
For Sowing: Use damp, moist sphagnum moss or vermiculite. It should be moist not wet! Take a fistful. If you can JUST squeeze a couple of drops of water from it, then it's about right. If you get more, then it's too wet. If less, then add a little water and try again. Mix the seeds with the moist sowing medium; put into a clear plastic (ziploc) bag, label with species and date, and seal. No light is required for germination. Areally warm airing cupboard works well; Maintain a temperature 30-35C. (??) Check regularly for signs of activity by looking for white roots through the plastic. Ensure that the medium does not dry out. Seeds can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 years (or more) to germinate.
Potting up the germinated seed:
Use peat based compost for potting on , making sure it's damp, but not wet, and warm as the seed goes in. The kitchen microwave can be used to warm up the compost, but do check it, and let stand for a few seconds to cool if needed. Clean plastic drinking cups can be used for the germinated seed to develop in. Pierce the bottom with holes for drainage. These cups are better than plant pots not only because they are less bulky, but because they seem to suit root development better. They are quite deep compared to their width, and these proportions seem to be what is required to the long roots on bananas.
Place the germinated seed into the peat at a depth equal to their size, then cover with a disc of plastic to stop the compost from drying out, but not airtight. Plastic from any source can be used, i.e: empty butter, coleslaw, ice-cream tubs. Now, place the pot into a further container into an airing cupboard or warm spot. Keep an eye on them (check that the compost doesn't dry out, and also try not to over-water or root will rot) and the leaf should emerge after about a month. Although it can vary considerably. Keep the seedlings warm for the first few weeks. Feed and pot on as required.

They also said germination of Banana are the same as Palm seed germination.

I got my seeds off EBay and they came from GB. So when I gave the temperature 30-35C you know why. Also I'm not sure what a Warm Airing Cupboard is, I just put my on a heat mat.
I hope this can be of some help.

Let me know how yours turn out and how you did yours.

GOOD LUCK. Oh yes the very first thing that was mentioned was the "Growing of banana palm trees from seed is not an easy path to tread - there are may pitfalls along the way.

Please keep us informed on how you do and I will do the same.
Linda

Thanks Susie & Linda.
My instincts would have been to sow them in a sandy mix , cover and put on a heat mat. I think soaking is a good idea too.

I just got a little worried when I read of peeps nicking and stratifing them. Didn't sound right.

So we're good to go now. I do keep records on everything I grow so I will be back with the results.

I think I'll go ahead and plant companion containers with Pink Velvet banana and Cardboard sago seeds the same way.

Scooterbug the two kinds I planted were Hardy Royal Purple Flower Banana and Velvet Pink Banana. I purchased a Amazing Banana Ice Cream Blue Java plant from a dealer out of Canada. I'm so excited about the two kinds of seeds I planted, I just hope they don't take over two to three weeks to germinate, I get impatience wanting to see what I planted starting to peak through the soil.

Many plants have travelled on a scooter of mine.

But not on this one, he's a ''get there quick'' fun bike.

This is my plant pilfering scooter ... big saddle bags.

Brought plants home from as far away as FL.

This is 'ol Thunderpony somewhere in Northern FL.
