Duranta repens (pigeonberry)

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Does anyone know if mine will come back? I am not sure how dead mine is. I sure hope it comes back. After my searching for it and finally finding it, the next month Wally World had it so hopefully I can get more.

Also known as poke weed. Grows wild here in N Texas. Should come back for you. Mine petered out on me so I asked for some seed last year and need to sow them asap. Thanks for the reminder! There was a thread last year about this plant. I didn't know it was sold commercially.

No, not good 'ole Pokeweed. My mom had that donated to her yard (by a bird) and it's pretty neat. It got huge! This plant is Duranta repens (also erecta) and has tiny purple flowers edged in white and the butterflies etc. love it. There are some pics in the PlantFiles but I don't see whether it is going to come back.

Yup, common names cause confusion. I've seen pigeonberry called pokeweed too. Here's another pigeonberry. It looks interesting as well.

Koncrete--I have this very same plant........bought it at Calloway's last summer. I recently checked on mine, and there was green under some of the dead growth at the dirt surface--I'm crossing my fingers!!!

Yes, I believe it will come flying back. A new one that froze out, is pushing some new green.
I have a few seeds collected yesterday from a big one on my south corner.. Time to prune that puppy, it didn't even slow down in the cold here.
Let me know if you want some of these seed.

Yay! I cut it down last week because the branches were for sure dead. I never pull anything totally up tho until I give it a few months to come back.

Sidney, thanks for the seed offer! I hope that I don't have to go to that trouble tho. It's so stressful! lol I'll be lucky if I get the few seeds I've got going now out into the real world.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I understand that. My leaves actually browned, and I've never had it set seeds before.

I want some seeds, Sidney. Which reminds me that I need to sow my pokeweed seeds. Should have done that last fall!

You've got em John. Finally discovered what was making all these divits in my yard, ROBINS!
They have to keep going back again and again. I didn't bother them a bit. Makes me wonder if we have some plague worm hatching underground?

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Hello folks. I just discovered this plant in 03 and wintered it indoors and it didn't flower in 04. I thought they couldn't go below 30 degrees. My understanding is that it isn't likely that they would survive. Aren't they supposed to be evergreen? I bought a new one in in 04 because they are so nice. I hope I can get my hands on one for this season. I think it was the sapphire variety...I haven't seen alba yet.

Mine stayed green except for the leaves that froze from being watered at the wrong time when it was freezing outside one morning. I'll be surprised if you can grow it there outside year round.

Ya'll welcome sunshines2day, this is her first day here in the garden.

Yep, I e-mailed her first thing.

Welcome Sunshines! If Wal-Mart was carrying this last year then more people must be becoming aware of it. I like the purple/white one but will remember to post if I see white available.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I understand the white owned by my new friend JFG, doesn't get so big, more about 4 feet.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

One of mine is coming back!! The other isn't showing any signs of green yet, but I don't know why it wouldn't make it too. Yay!

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

I have pigeonberry, but the flowers are white, and it only gets about 14 inches tall. I comes back every year though.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Mine got about 4 feet tall! I saw lots of green coming up around both of mine now. :)
