I got my winter brug fix...

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

A few nights ago, Mountain Magic decided to grace my kitchen table with a couple of blooms on a rooted cutting in water. Oh my gosh, that fragrance is so addictive. I'm afraid the blooms are almost gone now, but while eating last night, I sure did enjoy the tail end of something that rarely happens at my house. I hope some of the rest of you are having a bloom here and there. Just thinking about having to wait until June or July for blooms is so depressing.

Oh Lucky You!
They look so Elegant as if they were going to start dancing
for you. I'm also awaiting this summer and the fragrance filling
the Air.

Very lovely Shirley...so glad you could get your fix, while waiting for summer.....June? will that be your first blooms outdoors? or in your GH?

Dear Brugie
Absolutely gorgeous, that is one beau-ti-ful brug... I am so happy for you!
Think of it as low-calorie Valentine's candy for the eyes and nose. :)
Is it common for cuttings to bloom?
With photos like this, we can all make it to Summer dreaming of things to come.

Thanks all. Margie, I can't set anything outside until around the first week of May, if then. My greenhouse is only large enough to take care of my brug seedlings and other things I start in the spring. All of my big plants will get a dose of outside during the day and then be rolled back into the garage for the night. They will probably start blooming, for the most part, around the first week in July. It seems like many of my cuttings begin blooming at about the same time, with some not blooming until the last of the month. Other than seedlings, my brugs will give me three flushes of blooms and if the weather cooperates, maybe four. October bloom is always iffy at best.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'm so happy you got some blooms- on cuttings too. What a winter treat....

Edited for the wrong name. I think I need some more coffee :)

BRUGIE they are beautifull, nothing here since Maya left me :) but I know now how you feel.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Kristi....wrong person. LOL! Thanks anyway. It was nice, even tho it won't last long.
I guess we were just lucky, Doris. I'm going to go to the local nursery today and get my plant fix. Maybe some of my brug cuttings down there are getting some size on them. I haven't been there for almost two months.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Well, I'm such a DORK I need glasses!!!! It's beautiful. All I've got is a case of aphids, your lucky to have blooms.

What elegant looking flowers. You certainly have the touch Shirley! I sure hope I have the same success as you do.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

wow Shirley you really have a short growing season. I'll start setting things out about the middle of next month. Haven't even had much winter this year thankfully. Just a few days at a time and warms right back up.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Oh....so pretty! Thank you for sharing that with us, Shirley!

Goshen, OH(Zone 6a)

AH , blooms in the winter, I can almost smell them right through the screen, lucky you. My memory is working overtime just thinking about it.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

How was the trip today to the nursery Shirley? Gosh, I can hardly wait. I need to find a place to go soon .... one that is open. I love that nursery down by you ... they had some really nice stuff last year.

What a wonderful winter treat.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks everyone.....Deb, the main greenhouse is full and they are going to open the next one next week. It's hard to believe they will have 13 greenhouses full of plants by roundup time.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

I can hardly wait .... !!!

bronson, IA(Zone 4a)

Great color and great blooms--lucky you Shirley--thanks for sharing--made my day!!

Homestead, FL(Zone 10b)

They're beautiful Brugie.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks and they arrived right after my amaryllis died, so they were even more welcome. LOL!!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

How cool !!!!

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Beautiful blooms Shirley, and you're so lucky to have them inside. The few blooms that I am getting are in the gh and I have to go out there to visit them. They make a nice center piece.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

Shirley, your blooms are beautiful. What a nice winter treat!

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

So glad that you are able to enjoy a few blooms inside during your very cold weather. How is the fragrance on MM?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks everyone. Frannie, during the summer it smells great. In the house it is good, but not nearly as strong. I can't distinguish as to what one fragrance smells like compared to another brug's fragrance. They all smell good to me.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh such pretty blooms. My little MM had 1 bloom while I was gone and I forgot to tell my DH to take a picture for me. I was dying to see it. I will make believe yours are mine. LOL

Right now the plant has no leaves, not even one much less a bloom. All my special pinks are on a shelf together and they are all covered with aphids. Just thick with them. Tom didn't even notice. He at least seemed to hit most of them with water on occasion. And the special ones are alive, kind of, LOL, so what is there to complain about?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Shirley, you are so lucky. You have some of the most special brugs that are out there. I'd like to come raid your greenhouse some dark night, but you just live too darn far away. LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sylvia, my greenhouse is empty. LOL! I guarantee you, if you came to visit, you would have plenty to go home with. I know...it is a long ways. My BIL and SIL come to Iowa once a year from Rockdale, Texas and if they drive straight through it is 14 hours. That's a two day trip for me. It is getting very easy to just stay home.

Thanks everyone. Hopefully she will put on some good shows next summer. I'm sure ready.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, what beautiful blooms! Bet they make your house sure smell great!!

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Brugie, I am amazed, I pealed the seeds you sent me of MM a couple of weeks ago and they are already up, are these the same as this flower, I hope so, never had any sprout that fast befor.

Doris

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

This flower would be one of the parents. They won't be the same. Seeds never are the same from most brugs. There are some kinds that will be the same, like Sangs and Arboreas.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

well regardless, I love how fast these sprouted, I keep looking at all my brugs and none have Yd yet, just my little Maya :)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You will have lots to watch Y later this spring. There is nothing like it when you have them blooming all around the yard.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Very pretty Shirley. I found a L'amour blooming in the greenhouse today. It was behind some other plants, so I didn't see it soon enough to get to bring it inside to enjoy.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Patricia. L'Amour is a very pretty brug. I love the wide open bloom and the long tendrils on her, and her fragrance would come in second to Butterfly here, so she is one I would want to keep around for a while. I'm starting to have to many favorites. LOL!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Shirley, lovely......

Norfolk, VA(Zone 8a)

and you have them in just water?
not in soil?
amazing
do you add anything to the water?
PS I have 4 sprouters from those Dec PB seeds that I started midJan. The 4 are sharing a 6in pot now.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Brugie, beautiful blooms, thanks for sharing. Out in the gh Whiskers in a large pot has quite a lot of buds and 1 bloom that has been open for a week and still looks good. Two others in large pots also have buds. I have been fighting aphids most of the winter. Thought I had them under control but obviously didn't as the tiny buds onSnowbank had so many aphids made some of the buds drop off. I finally put systemic granules in the ground. Donna

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I hate those aphids. I had an outbreak of them, especially on the one brug closest to the lights. Aphids must like the heat. hey are gone now. I hope you get pictures of Whiskers when she blooms, Donna.

Karen, yes, the cuttings are just in water...no nutrients. I'm going to pot them up this week.

Hi Pebble. How are your brugs doing?

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I had some aphids but I'm fighting the white flies.
